Presented by the global blade manufacturer, Kai Corporation, this year marks the fifth anniversary of the competition. Known for its high-quality sewing scissors, Kai Corporation has invited renowned hat designer Nobuki Hizume, a holder of the prestigious French title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France, to judge the event.
Overview of the Competition
The KAI Hat & Head-piece Competition began in 2022 with an aim to showcase exceptional talent in hat and headpiece design. Entrants will have the opportunity to create original designs inspired by the theme of "Enthusiasm." After a preliminary review of submitted designs, successful candidates will receive production funding of 20,000 yen to bring their creations to life. Select designs will then go through a final evaluation stage, where the grand award winner will receive a total prize of 1.5 million yen, including fashion training, Kai’s sewing scissors model “O,” and an interview feature in a fashion media outlet.
In 2026, two dedicated categories for submissions have been introduced: a Hat category and a Head-piece category. Each category will award a special prize worth 50,000 yen to the winners.
