Enhancing Electric Reliability in York County

FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company, known as Met-Ed in eastern Pennsylvania, is undergoing significant upgrades to its electric delivery system in York County, focusing primarily on improving service reliability for nearly 300 customers in Dillsburg. This upgrade project is vital, especially during extreme weather conditions when electricity demand typically peaks.

Project Details

The initiative involves a comprehensive replacement of aging infrastructure. Over 1.3 miles of older copper wiring will be substituted with larger-diameter aluminum wire. This change is not only expected to enhance the reliability of the electrical service but will also help accommodate the growing energy needs of the community. As noted by John Hawkins, President of FirstEnergy Pennsylvania, this proactive investment aims to support the steady growth witnessed in York County, where the population has surged by 8% since 2010.

To bolster this upgrade, the project encompasses the replacement of 32 wooden poles, numerous crossarms, 40 fuses, and 149 porcelain insulators along a section of a 13.2 kV power line. This line originates at a substation near Golf Course Road, extending to Baltimore Street and concluding at Welty Avenue. Also, to mitigate the impact of wildlife on the lines, 49 wildlife guards will be installed. These guards serve as protective barriers to prevent squirrels and other climbing animals from interfering with transformers and other sensitive electrical equipment, which could lead to service outages.

Expectation and Future Plans

FirstEnergy anticipates the completion of this significant project by the end of April. It is integral to the Long Term Infrastructure Improvement Plan (LTIIP III), which outlines a $382 million investment strategy over five years designed to accelerate capital improvements in the Met-Ed electric distribution system. This plan aims to ensure reliability and continuous service provision for customers amidst rising energy demands.

The LTIIP III initiative is part of the broader Energize365 program, aimed at transforming the electric grid to meet present and future needs effectively. With planned investments of $28 billion between 2025 and 2029, this forward-thinking program will create a smarter, more resilient grid, capable of accommodating the increased demand from electric vehicles, the electrification of residential and business infrastructures, and the integration of clean energy sources.

Met-Ed currently services around 592,000 customers across 3,300 square miles in eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania.
