Dr. Lachlan Forrow Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

In an exciting announcement, Dr. Lachlan Forrow has been celebrated for his remarkable contributions to healthcare as he receives the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship (ASF). This event will take place during the 2026 National Leadership Summit, hosted in Tulsa, Oklahoma from November 5 to 8. The award recognizes Dr. Forrow's lifelong dedication to the fields of bioethics, palliative care, and the promotion of medical humanism.

For over four decades, Dr. Forrow has embodied the principles of compassion and service, reflecting the core values of Albert Schweitzer's legacy. His journey with the ASF began during his tenure as a senior MD student at Harvard Medical School in 1982, when he became a Schweitzer Fellow at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon. This profound experience instilled in him a lifelong commitment to serving those in need. Rachel Gold, the National Executive Director of ASF, stated, "There is no one more appropriate to honor on our 35th anniversary." Under his guidance, the Fellowship transformed from a singular Boston initiative into a national network, mentoring countless students dedicated to community service.

Dr. Forrow has dedicated the majority of his career to serving as a physician at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), where he played an instrumental role in founding and directing pioneering ethics and palliative care programs. His impact extended beyond his practice as he held a prominent position on the faculty at Harvard Medical School until his retirement in 2020. Post-retirement, he continued to influence the academic community as a senior fellow at the HMS Center for Bioethics, a part-time lecturer in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, and as a faculty associate at Harvard’s Safra Center for Ethics until 2025.

Rebecca Weintraub Brendel, MD, JD, director of the HMS Center for Bioethics, expressed, "Lachlan Forrow's commitment to advancing health and humanism in medicine makes him most deserving of this recognition." Forrow's influence on the clinical and ethics communities at Harvard Medical School has been profound, as he continuously urged rigorous exploration of ethical dilemmas in modern medicine.

Beyond his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Forrow served as the past board chair and CEO of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate organization. He also actively participated in the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, another Nobel-recognized initiative. As Chair of ASF, he was crucial in evolving the Fellowship into a national organization, with BIDMC acting as its National Office from 1992 to 2025.

Reflecting on his time with ASF, Dr. Forrow said, "Whatever I've contributed to ASF is through the Fellows themselves. As a Lambaréné Schweitzer Fellow in 1982, I learned that Schweitzer-spirited service is a lifelong pursuit, not just an episodic endeavor. I feel honored to receive this recognition from an organization that continues to champion the values of compassion and service."

Since its inception in 1940, ASF has championed the principles of humanitarian aid and the reverence for life that Dr. Albert Schweitzer epitomized, dedicating efforts to enhance community health by supporting graduate students in various fields to engage with under-resourced communities. Since expanding to the U.S. in 1991, ASF has empowered over 5,000 Fellows to reach about 23,000 individuals annually across the country.

Currently, nearly 250 ASF Fellows are engaged in critical community projects, such as establishing mobile clinics for the homeless, offering dental care for those recovering from addiction, creating musical programs to address social isolation among the elderly, and improving maternal mental health through community-focused perinatal programs in Tulsa.

As Dr. Forrow receives this prestigious award, the legacy of compassionate service continues to inspire future generations of healthcare leaders dedicated to developing impactful community-rooted health equity initiatives.
