A staggering three-quarters of respondents revealed that they are now seeking more budget-friendly dating options. In fact, 80% of those surveyed expressed that their Valentine’s Day plans have been impacted by financial considerations.

In light of these findings, Sweethearts is rolling out playful yet practical new phrases such as "SPLIT RENT," "SHARE LOGN," "CAR POOL," "BUY N BULK," and "COOK FOR 2." These creative sayings are added alongside the cherished classic messages like "CUTIE PIE," "LOVE BUG," and "MARRY ME." This addition not only showcases the shifting dynamics of romantic expression but also ensures that Sweethearts remains relevant to contemporary lovers.

Evan Brock, the vice president of marketing for Spangler Candy Company, the creator of Sweethearts, emphasized the brand's commitment to evolving with societal trends in relationships. He stated, "Sweethearts has always evolved with the times by staying aware of current dating trends and relationships — and being practical is having a moment."

Interestingly, despite the economic uncertainties, it seems candy remains a top choice for millennials during this love-filled season, with 33% placing it at the top of their Valentine’s Day wish list. Candy outpaced flowers and greeting cards in popularity, suggesting that the sweet treat continues to play a vital role in romantic exchanges. Particularly among singles, candy ranked higher than flowers as a preferred gift (34% vs. 29%).

The brand has previously demonstrated its ability to tap into the zeitgeist, having gone viral for innovative special releases in past years. Last Valentine’s Day, they captured attention with Situationship Boxes—filled with hearts that represented ambiguous, modern relationships. Furthermore, Sweethearts embraced technology by providing services through scannable codes, offering moving trucks and wedding licenses, all in the spirit of love.

Sweethearts is not just about romance; they also bring a bit of humor to the mix. Recently, they released "Ghosted Sweethearts" for Halloween, a limited-edition collection featuring empty hearts, playfully addressing the phenomenon of ghosting.

To gain insights into consumer preferences, Sweethearts conducted a survey targeting 1,000 Gen Z and 1,000 millennials who are single, casually dating, or in committed relationships between December 23 and December 31, 2025. This approach underlines their commitment to understanding and catering to the changing needs of their audience.
