Launch of the Happy with Autism Project Site
On March 12, the Happy with Autism project site officially launched, initiated by the Tokyo Autism Association (Chairperson: Masaharu Sugiyama). This initiative, under the concept of "being happy with autism," aims to create a platform that shares experiences and voices from individuals on the autism spectrum and their families as they approach World Autism Awareness Day, recognized on April 2nd by the United Nations.
A Legacy of Blue Action in Tokyo
Since 2013, in collaboration with the Get in Touch organization, the Tokyo Autism Association has called for the city to be bathed in blue, promoting various blue-themed events known as "Warm Blue." These activities include lighting up iconic locations such as the Shibuya Crossing and Hachiko Statue in blue, as well as hosting blue car parades, engaging numerous businesses and community groups. These vibrant symbols serve to heighten awareness of autism during the month of April.
Online Activities Amidst COVID-19
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, physical activities were put on hold from 2021 to 2025; however, the association continues to promote blue initiatives through online programming. This has included live broadcasts featuring various enterprises showcasing their blue actions and competitions like the 'Blue Art Contest' conducted on social media in recent years.
The Purpose of the Happy with Autism Project Site
The newly launched Happy with Autism project site serves as a repository of past blue actions, complete with archives of five online live broadcasts, precious blue-themed photographs, and artistic submissions. This site aspires to function much like a "museum" dedicated to Autism Awareness.
Furthermore, it seeks to bridge the gap in understanding what it truly means to live with autism, clarifying misconceptions and enhancing societal awareness. While terms like "autism" and "autism spectrum disorder" have gained familiarity, a significant understanding of the unique challenges and experiences faced by those on the spectrum remains elusive. The project's goal is to foster a world where individuals with autism are recognized and embraced as equal members of society.
In advance of the project site opening, longer interview segments featuring twelve individuals with autism discussing their experiences are also set to be released, adding depth and personal narrative to the project.
Showcasing the Positive Aspects of Autism
The project not only aims to highlight the challenges associated with autism but also to celebrate its unique attributes. The idea that" autism equates to unhappiness" is a misconception; rather, life with autism inherently contains beauty and distinctive perspectives deserving of recognition. As the project moves forward, it plans to continue showcasing the positive aspects of autism while also addressing the difficulties.
The Happy with Autism project invites everyone to engage with its content and learn more about the autism community and its rich tapestry of experiences. For more information, please reach out to the Tokyo Autism Association.
