First-Ever Tasting of Friuli Venezia Giulia Wines Captivates New York City Wine Lovers
The first Wines of Friuli Venezia Giulia Tasting in the United States recently took place in New York City, marking a significant milestone in the promotion of this unique Italian wine region. Organized by UNI.DOC FVG, the event featured 38 prominent wine producers from Friuli Venezia Giulia and attracted over 200 guests from the wine trade, media, and influential tastemakers. The event was hosted at the elegant Bryant Park Grill on October 8.
The day began with an educational seminar led by renowned sommelier and wine educator, Jeff Porter. He enthralled attendees with insights into the historical context and unique classifications of Friuli Venezia Giulia wines, including its distinct DOCs and DOCGs, such as DOC Friuli, DOC Collio, and DOCG Ramandolo. Attendees also learned about the region's native grape varietals, such as Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, which contribute to the exceptional quality and diversity of its wines. Through this masterclass, guests gained a comprehensive understanding of Friuli Venezia Giulia's terroirs and the traditional winemaking techniques that have evolved over centuries.
Following the seminar, the walk-around tasting offered a platform for producers to showcase their craft, allowing guests to engage directly with them while sampling a wide range of wines. This interaction fostered meaningful connections between Italian winemakers and American wine professionals, enhancing the profile and visibility of the region's wines in the U.S. market. The responses from attendees were overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the exceptional craftsmanship and rich flavors inherent in Friuli Venezia Giulia wines.
In addition to the wine tastings, the attendees were treated to Montasio DOP cheese, a celebrated culinary product from the region, known for its refined flavors. Marco Rabino, President of UNI.DOC FVG, expressed enthusiasm over the event, stating, "This occasion marks a historic moment for Friuli Venezia Giulia. The participation from trade professionals underscores the growing interest in our wines and the potential they hold in the American market."
The success of this inaugural tasting lays a strong foundation for future events aimed at raising awareness about the remarkable wines and distinctive identity of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The participating wineries included well-known names such as Aganis, Livon, and Villa Russiz, which collectively showcased the vibrancy and richness of the region. As Friuli Venezia Giulia continues to carve a niche in the global wine industry, this event signals promising opportunities for further exploration and appreciation of its unique offerings.
The organization behind this initiative, UNI.DOC FVG, has been dedicated to promoting Friuli Venezia Giulia and its terroirs since its establishment in 2012. They aim to enhance the visibility of this region's wines internationally through educational events and media relations. The successful tasting in New York exemplifies their commitment to highlighting the excellence and diversity of Friuli Venezia Giulia's wine culture.
By promoting the region's distinct wines, UNI.DOC FVG hopes to lay the groundwork for future initiatives that can further elevate Friuli Venezia Giulia’s profile globally. Given the resounding success of this debut event in New York City, the future looks bright for this remarkable wine region and its potential impact on the international wine scene.
