AKC Canine Health Foundation Celebrates a Milestone Event
The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) recently marked a significant milestone with the successful conduct of the 2025 National Parent Club Canine Health Conference. This biennial event, which has been sponsored by Nestlé Purina since 1997, plays a vital role in enhancing the lives of dogs through research and discovery. Holding the conference in North Carolina, particularly in Durham, not only celebrates the Foundation's 30th anniversary, but also highlights its commitment to advancing canine health.
Themed "Science for Healthy, Vibrant Dogs," this 15th biennial conference drew an impressive array of participants, including hundreds of canine health researchers, dedicated breeders, experienced veterinarians, veterinary technicians, students, and passionate dog lovers. The turnout was one of the highest in the conference's history, showcasing the event's growing reputation as a key gathering for professionals invested in canine health. Nearly 50 veterinary students and residents, representing over 20 universities, were also present, marking a vital connection between academia and practical advancements in dog health.
The CEO of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, Dr. Stephanie Montgomery, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the event, stating, "It is extraordinary to have so many dog enthusiasts—breeders, veterinarians, researchers—come together to explore the latest in canine health and learn from one another. Engaging with this community, which is driving progress for dogs, reinforces the power of our mission in action."
Adding to the spirit of recognition and advancement, Dr. Jason Stull, a professor and researcher at the University of Prince Edward Island, was honored with the Asa Mays Excellence in Canine Health Research Award. This prestigious award commemorates investigators who have significantly advanced knowledge and practices in canine health research and was established 20 years ago at the 6th biennial conference. Dr. Stull expressed his gratitude, stating, "It is a tremendous honor to receive this recognition from the AKC Canine Health Foundation and my colleagues. The Foundation has been instrumental in my success as a researcher."
The AKC Canine Health Foundation has been tirelessly working since 1995 to leverage scientific advances to address the health needs of all dogs. With an impressive funding milestone of over $75 million dedicated to canine health research, the Foundation provides crucial grants for high-quality studies aimed at preventing, treating, and curing canine diseases. Its commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility is underscored by their top-tier ratings, including a four-star rating from Charity Navigator and the Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid.
As the conference wrapped up, attendees left with renewed enthusiasm and knowledge to further their contributions to canine health. The event stood out not only as a gathering of passionate individuals but also as a pivotal moment in the ongoing journey toward improving the lives of dogs everywhere.
