Yamagata Prefecture Launches Unique 'Migration Marriage' Initiative to Attract Residents

Yamagata Prefecture's New Initiative

Yamagata Prefecture is embarking on an exciting new journey with the launch of the 'Migration Marriage' initiative on June 22. This program will see 35 municipalities across the prefecture coming together to promote not only marriage but also the transition to life in Yamagata for individuals seeking to relocate. By collaborating with the Japan Marriage Support Association, Yamagata is setting a remarkable precedent for the Tohoku region in Japan.

What is 'Migration Marriage'?

'Migration Marriage' is a rare and innovative approach in Japan that combines the search for a marriage partner with the chance to find a new home. This initiative uniquely pairs singles with potential spouses while simultaneously facilitating their move to Yamagata. Since its inception in 2020, this program has collaborated with municipalities across 12 prefectures and has received over 2,160 applications as of May 2026.

This initiative provides not just the opportunity to meet prospective partners, but also guidance on various aspects essential for a smooth transition to a new life, such as job opportunities, housing options, child-rearing environments, and regional information. This holistic approach allows newcomers to comfortably assess their options for relocating to rural regions.

Yamagata: A Region Rich in Nature and Culture

Yamagata is known for its stunning natural landscapes, rich food culture, and welcoming communities. The prefecture is famous for producing the best cherries in Japan, alongside a variety of seafood from the Sea of Shonai and premium rice. Each municipality in Yamagata boasts relaxing hot springs to enhance the living experience.

Tourists and residents alike are enchanted by the area's many attractions, such as the historical 'Yamadera' associated with Matsuo Basho, the internationally recognized 'Zao's Ice Trees', and the charming Taisho Roman-style 'Ginzan Onsen'. Located just 2.5 to 3 hours away from Tokyo via the Yamagata Shinkansen, the region is garnering attention as an ideal spot for teleworking or dual-residency arrangements.

Yamagata has also received accolades from international travel media, being named as one of the '25 Must-Visit Destinations in the World for 2026' by National Geographic, highlighting its international appeal.

Comprehensive Support for Migration, Marriage, and Child-Rearing

The province has established a robust support system through the 'Yamagata Happy Support Center', which operates jointly with all 35 municipalities and various commerce groups. The center offers a matching system called 'Ai Navi Yamagata', aimed at assisting individuals looking to marry.

Furthermore, Yamagata has developed a multitude of support programs tailored for young couples and families, including relocation grants, housing aid, and food assistance to ease the transition for newcomers. Initiatives addressing childcare costs, such as reduced fees for children aged 0-2 years and access to free indoor play facilities, exemplify the region's commitment to creating a secure environment for families post-marriage.
