The Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering and Technology is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for its highly sought-after 2026-2027 research fellowships. These fellowships present an incredible opportunity for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and independent scholars delving into the rich history of science and related humanities.

As the fellowship program manager, Antoinette Bettasso, emphasized, "Every day around the globe, researchers unveil the captivating human narratives behind some of history's most significant scientific advancements. We are proud to support this crucial work that aims to share these transformative stories." The fellowships are designed to encourage fresh ideas and perspectives that amplify the impact of scientific advancements on our world.

Fellowship Types and Support


The Linda Hall Library offers both residential fellowships for those who wish to conduct research in Kansas City, as well as virtual fellowships for scholars who may be accessing the library's extensive digital resources from afar. Applicants have the option to request funding of $3,000 per month for doctoral students, whereas postdoctoral researchers and those with terminal degrees can seek up to $4,200 per month.

Last year marked the successful hosting of 30 fellows, both virtually and in-person, who explored diverse topics within the history of science. Among the various fellowships available, there are specialized grants aimed at supporting specific research areas:

  • - History of Science and Medicine Fellowship: This fellowship, in collaboration with the Clendening History of Medicine Library, grants one month of residential funding ($3,000 per month) to a doctoral student investigating the historical context of science and medicine.

  • - Pearson Fellowship in Aerospace History: Awarding up to two months of funding ($4,200 per month), this fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scholars conducting research in the domains of aviation or space exploration history.

  • - Presidential Fellowship in Bibliography: This fellowship provides up to four months of funding ($4,200 per month) for postdoctoral scholars focusing on books and manuscripts as tangible artifacts.

All fellows, whether current or former, are granted special digitization privileges to the library's vast collection of science and engineering resources. This access can be invaluable in enriching their research and expanding knowledge further into the field.
