Dole and KKDJ Launch Collaboration for Sustainable Donuts to Celebrate Environmental Month

Dole and KKDJ Partner for Environmental Month

In celebration of Environmental Month, which includes World Environment Day on June 5, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Japan, or KKDJ, has teamed up with Dole to launch an exciting new product line called “Mottainai Donuts.” Set to hit stores on June 4, 2025, these donuts creatively utilize unsellable fruits, inviting customers to indulge in sustainability through deliciousness.

This collaboration aligns with Dole's longstanding initiative, the “Mottainai Fruit Project,” aimed at reducing food waste by making good use of aesthetically imperfect fruits. The project highlights how bananas and pineapples that are deemed unsuitable for distribution due to their size or appearance can still be enjoyed in delightful dessert forms. Two unique donut varieties will be available throughout the promotion: the “Choco Banana” and “Old Fashioned Pineapple.”

Mottainai Donuts: A Feast on Waste

The “Choco Banana” is a mouthwatering creation featuring banana cream made from Dole's “Mottainai Bananas,” which are fruits that meet quality standards but are considered unsellable due to their appearance. Wrapped in rich dark chocolate and decorated with a custard-flavored drizzle, this donut is topped with crispy banana chips, offering a delightful experience of natural sweetness with every bite.

On the other hand, the “Old Fashioned Pineapple” utilizes pineapple trimmings that have been repurposed through juicing or powder processing. This donut is crafted with an old-fashioned dough that integrates pineapple fibers and is complemented with a tangy pineapple juice sauce, topped with white chocolate and powdered sugar, ensuring a burst of flavor reminiscent of sunny tropical days.

These delectable offerings are not just indulgent treats but also serve as a reminder of the ongoing global issue of food waste, making them a perfect reflection of KKDJ’s commitment to a more sustainable future. KKDJ has launched a dedicated page titled “BE SWEET” to further showcase its sustainability initiatives and goals, inviting customers to explore and participate in its efforts towards promoting eco-friendliness and joy through every munch.

Promoting Sustainability Through Taste

As part of its ambitious plan to create a better future, KKDJ aims to bring “Little JOY” into everyday life through delicious options and community involvement. The commitment to four key promises—providing safe and tasty meals, caring for the planet, supporting local communities, and ensuring meaningful work for all—further strengthens its resolve to foster positive change in society through its products.

The Mottainai Donuts will be available at Krispy Kreme locations nationwide, minus certain event and KKD retail outlets, starting from June 4th. They can be enjoyed at prices of JPY 356 for the “Choco Banana” and JPY 334 for the “Old Fashioned Pineapple,” both available until mid-July.

Additionally, consumers can indulge in the “Mottainai Fruit Dozen Half,” including both donut types, or opt for the “Mottainai Fruit Box,” presenting a tasting option along with Krispy Kreme’s classic Original Glazed.

KKDJ's collaboration with Dole not only highlights the potential of supposedly wasted fruits but also reinforces a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, encouraging us all to think twice about food waste. Let’s savor the delicious story behind the Mottainai Donuts and celebrate this unique initiative!
