XCMG, a global leader in construction machinery, has proudly announced the successful completion and handover of the sixth phase of its Africa Water Cellar Project, located in Ethiopia. This initiative, which operates in conjunction with the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD), aims to enhance access to reliable drinking water for rural communities. The latest phase, comprising 36 newly constructed water cellars, has now elevated the total number to 237, directly benefiting thousands of local residents.

The completion event, which took place in late November, gathered community representatives, XCMG and CFRD officials, as well as agricultural leaders from local agencies. Meng Xianggang, a representative from XCMG's International Business Unit in Ethiopia, expressed pride in the initiative, stating, "From 0 to 237 — each cellar represents a drop of hope for rural households. We remain committed to providing long-term solutions for clean water access and helping communities build sustainable livelihoods."

Despite Ethiopia receiving an abundance of rainfall annually, proper water management has historically been lacking, leading to scarcity during the dry seasons. The head of agriculture in Minjar County remarked on the significance of these water cellars, noting that they serve 36 households directly. He extended gratitude to XCMG, CFRD, and the Ethiopian Rainwater Harvesting Association for their support.

The impact of the water cellars has been transformative. As one beneficiary farmer articulated, access to consistent water supplies has allowed her family to grow crops such as coffee, papayas, and avocados, unlocking new avenues for income generation. The community's appreciation for XCMG and CFRD's continued efforts to enhance their living conditions is palpable.

Since its inception in 2016, the Africa Water Cellar Project has significantly evolved, transitioning from a pilot program to a comprehensive initiative with six completed phases. The program initially focused on ensuring basic access to drinking water; however, it has now expanded to foster household economies and rural livelihoods, thereby contributing to sustainable development in local areas.
