Supporting Residential Customers: Eurelectric's Five Commitments for Energy Transition

Supporting Residential Customers in Energy Transition

In a proactive move, European electricity suppliers have committed to five key initiatives aimed at supporting residential customers on their journey towards energy transition. Announced by Eurelectric, these commitments target smarter communication, increased awareness, energy efficiency, user-friendly tools, and incentives to promote flexible consumption.

The shift towards a more sustainable energy system involves everyone, and these electric suppliers are stepping up to ensure inclusive participation. By integrating electrical solutions into everyday life, residential customers can actively partake in the energy revolution while harnessing numerous advantages. Despite this potential, many benefits remain untapped. Eurelectric aims to rectify this with newfound empowering strategies.

In the backdrop of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, and soaring energy costs, Eurelectric commissioned a comprehensive survey involving over 2,000 consumers from twelve countries. This survey sought insights into consumer needs and preferences. The findings indicated that while there is a high level of awareness regarding energy-saving measures, actual adoption rates are low: despite 80% of participants taking steps to reduce their emissions, only 23% have implemented electrified solutions.

Kristian Ruby, the Secretary General of Eurelectric, noted, "The energy crisis drove short-term savings, but we need sustainable changes for the long haul. To accelerate electrification, all consumers must feel supported, which requires reducing initial costs and boosting simplicity."

Eurelectric's Five Commitments
To facilitate the energy transition and ensure that all customers can engage effectively, the electricity sector has pledged to:
1. Intelligent Communication: Provide personalized, multilingual guidance and real-time alerts that cater to individual consumer needs.
2. Inclusivity: Engage all customer demographics, focusing on vulnerable groups, renters, and people lacking digital access.
3. Enhanced Efficiency: Develop tailored energy-saving recommendations, smart tools, and support for home renovations aimed at maximizing energy efficiency.
4. Simplified Services: Create intuitive applications, automated tools, and better access to energy solutions for easier service engagement.
5. Demand Flexibility Promotion: Encourage demand-side response strategies that help consumers save while bolstering grid resilience.

Conclusion

Eurelectric represents the collective interests of the European electric industry. Their initiatives aim to enhance the sector's competitiveness, provide efficient representation on public issues, and advance the role of electricity in societal development. By committing to these five key areas, Eurelectric not only seeks to empower consumers but also to create a sustainable future where everyone can contribute to and benefit from the energy transition.
