Sony Bank's Commitment to Sustainability
Sony Bank, led by President Keiji Minami, has actively undertaken a planting initiative at Hibiya Park, using innovative agricultural methods known as Synecoculture. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to enhancing biodiversity within urban environments.
Starting from 2024, the bank plans to engage in spring and autumn planting at the park's Color Leaf Garden, where they utilize Synecoculture—a method that eliminates the need for tillage, fertilization, and pesticides. This three-year project aims to create a healthier ecosystem and promote biodiversity in one of Tokyo's most beloved parks.
In this third year of planting activities, Sony Bank has reassessed the varieties of plants being used, taking into account environmental conditions and the overall stability of growth. The team has also implemented new strategies for establishing an optimal planting environment, ensuring that the chosen species can adapt and thrive.
Regular maintenance and observation by bank employees play a crucial role in this initiative. By engaging in the care of the Color Leaf Garden, staff members gain firsthand experience with Synecoculture practices and develop a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and ecosystem services.
To further spread awareness of their efforts, the bank communicates updates about plant growth and initiative progress through internal newsletters, fostering discussion among employees about the significance of biodiversity and their contribution to a sustainable society.
Beyond local efforts, Sony Bank is also supporting international initiatives in developing countries. Starting in 2025, the bank will team up with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to introduce Synecoculture in countries like Senegal and Cameroon. These projects aim to combat land degradation, enhance agricultural productivity, and restore ecosystems.
Sony Bank is dedicated to continuing its collaborative planting efforts at Hibiya Park while supporting JICA’s initiatives that promote biodiversity globally. Through these efforts, the bank strives to make significant contributions toward a sustainable future.
