San Diego Zoo Safari Park Unveils Its New Elephant Valley Experience

A New Era of Elephant Conservation at San Diego Zoo Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park proudly unveiled its latest attraction, Denny Sanford Elephant Valley, on March 5, 2026. This highly anticipated opening celebrates not just the park’s expansion, but also its ongoing commitment to elephant conservation. The event included speeches from notable figures, such as San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Councilmember Marni van Wilpert, who emphasized the importance of protecting these majestic animals and their habitats.

Designing with Purpose

Elephant Valley is an innovative space designed to foster empathy and understanding for elephants. Surrounded by Africa's gentle giants, visitors of all ages can explore what it’s like to walk alongside the largest land mammals on Earth. Each step offers a closer look at the elephants' unique features, from their intricately wrinkled skin to their expressive eyes. One striking feature is a bridge that allows visitors to observe the elephant passageway below, resembling wildlife corridors that are vital to habitat connectivity.

Shawn Dixon, President and CEO of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, highlighted that conservation entails a long-term commitment requiring perseverance, research, and collaboration. He articulated that Elephant Valley is reflective of the alliance’s dedication to international conservation efforts.

The Herd and their Habitat

Currently, this immersive area is home to a herd of eight African elephants, including the matriarch Swazi and her companions Ndlulamitsi, Umngani, and others. The elephants in this herd have a profound story—as some were rescued and brought to the park in 2003. The design of Elephant Valley allows guests to learn about these animals' crucial roles in their ecosystems, and how their social structures are vital for their communities.

Central to Elephant Valley is the Mkutano House, a two-story restaurant offering a culinary journey across Africa's diverse flavors fused with global influences. The name 'Mkutano' signifies 'gathering', embodying the spirit of community. Situated beside a vast watering hole, the restaurant allows patrons a breathtaking view of elephants enjoying their natural behaviors, creating a unique dining experience.

Raising Awareness Through Community Engagement

Beyond entertainment, Elephant Valley aims to heighten awareness of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's global conservation partners and celebrate local cultures, particularly those from Kenya where humans and elephants coexist. Visitors will encounter vibrant beaded sticks representing the traditional artisanship of the Samburu people, serving as storytelling markers throughout the space. Mkutano House features artifacts crafted by BeadWORKS Kenya, which helps local artisans sustain their livelihoods.

The valley's landscape has been cultivated with over 350 rare and endangered African plants, chosen carefully by experienced horticulturists to resonate with the African savanna ecosystem. This attention to detail aims to replicate the complexity and beauty of these natural environments.

A Global Call to Action

The issues facing elephants—especially those stemming from human-wildlife conflict—are pressing. African savanna elephants are classified as endangered, with ongoing research from the Safari Park aiding in the conservation strategies needed to protect them in their native lands. For the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, knowledge gained from the park’s own herd correlates with significant insights and advancements in conservation technology.

The opening of Elephant Valley was made possible thanks to the generosity of over 5,200 donors, with significant contributions coming from Denny Sanford and several foundations and individuals dedicated to wildlife preservation.

Spanning 1,800 acres and home to over 3,000 animals from more than 290 species, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park provides an opportunity for individuals of all ages to deepen their connection to wildlife. Admission to Elephant Valley is included with the Safari Park entrance, inviting everyone to engage with the wonders of nature and take part in conservation efforts for years to come.
