With over 20 million visits each year across 31 states and two territories, these sites collectively support more than 15,000 jobs and contribute a staggering $1.5 billion in annual visitor spending.

This innovative methodology allowed researchers to gather insightful data from 15 case study sites, overcoming the challenges of traditional visitor counting methods that often fall short in accuracy, particularly in more remote or open-access locations. By analyzing mobile location data, the study successfully identified aggregate visitation patterns, including visitor origins and travel habits.
