In a remarkable convergence of innovation and collaboration, twelve European startups recently gathered in Gunma, Japan, as part of the Gunma×EIT Global Outreach Program. This initiative, spearheaded by Zero One Booster, aims to foster partnerships between local businesses in Gunma and pioneering startups from Europe under the auspices of the European Innovation and Technology Institute (EIT).
The Gunma×EIT program is designed to facilitate open innovation and new business development, bringing together talent and ideas across borders. Throughout the early part of June, numerous local organizations expressed their interest in participating, culminating in a three-day workshop co-hosted by EIT. As a result, five local companies and one organization were officially selected to take part in this transformative initiative.
To explore collaboration potential, these local participants submitted themes they wished to pursue in conjunction with European startups. This call for collaboration attracted responses from an impressive 76 European startups, which subsequently engaged in meetings via web conferencing with each participating local company. From this competitive pool, a select group of twelve startups was invited to Gunma for a three-day visit. The purpose of the visit was to solidify partnerships and further discuss the integration of innovative solutions into local business practices.
During their time in Gunma, these twelve European startups conducted individual site visits to the five participating companies and one organization. These visits were centered on understanding the technical capabilities and business models of Gunma’s enterprises. Through a series of discussions aimed at generating new business ideas and addressing challenges, the European startups and local companies made significant headway toward potential collaboration outcomes. Activities included office tours, factory explorations, and insightful discussions about how their respective strengths could complement each other.
Following the site inspections and discussions, the focus shifted toward specific collaboration initiatives. Both parties are actively working on plans for collaborative product development and the implementation of European technologies within the Japanese market. The support structure provided by Gunma Prefecture and EIT will continue to be instrumental, with follow-up efforts planned through the end of March next year.
