Bakumatsu Curry: A Culinary Revolution in Shibuya
On October 10, 2025, a unique dining experience will arrive in the bustling streets of Shibuya with the grand opening of Bakumatsu Curry, a specialty vegetable soup curry restaurant introduced by ALL FARM, the renowned organic restaurant group known for its commitment to quality and sustainability.
Located in the heart of Shibuya, the new establishment will serve up a tantalizing menu that showcases the natural flavors of organic heritage vegetables sourced from their own farm, Inai Farm, located in Sakura, Chiba. This innovative dining space is part of ALL FARM’s effort to celebrate agriculture as a revered profession, committed to cultivating approximately 200 varieties of pesticide-free and chemical-free heritage vegetables.
A New Wave of Japanese Curry Culture
The restaurant embodies a modern evolution of Japanese curry cuisine, transcending trends and genres. The essence of Bakumatsu Curry is encapsulated in its name, which symbolizes an era of transformation and cultural rebirth. Just as Japan experienced profound changes during the Bakumatsu period, the creators of Bakumatsu Curry aspire to inspire a cultural shift in how we value food in today's fast-paced society.
At the heart of Bakumatsu Curry’s unique offering is an original soup crafted without any animal products, extracting the natural essence of seasonal vegetables through a carefully prepared broth that blends Japanese seasonings and spices. This meticulous process maximizes the inherent flavors of vegetables, fostering a depth of taste that challenges diners to explore the true essence of deliciousness.
Designing a Unique Dining Experience
The restaurant, compact at just 13 tsubo (approximately 43 square meters) with 18 seats, features a simple yet calming ambiance accentuated by wood and earthy elements. Designed by Shanghai-based graphic designer Han Gao, the logo prominently displayed on the restaurant’s large noren (fabric curtain) symbolizes themes of 'change' and 'space.' Behind the counter, a gallery showcases original clay pots and ceramics available for purchase.
Menu Offerings
During lunch hours, guests can indulge in a variety of soup curry options, while the dinner service expands the menu to include a selection of seasonal vegetable dishes and beverages. For those looking to enhance their dining experience, Bakumatsu Curry offers unique drinks made from vegetables, including kale beer and spiced sodas, alongside a thoughtful selection of sake that pairs beautifully with the savory soup. A special plan featuring five vegetable dishes, soup curry, and a drink is available for 7,700 yen.
Signature Soup Curry
Featuring a base of hand-cultivated organic vegetables, the original specialty soup harmonizes umami and spices, served in custom clay pots crafted by skilled artisans. This presentation ensures a rich aroma and maintains the soup’s temperature, allowing diners to savor every drop.
Toppings and Drinks
Patrons can personalize their experience with an array of diverse toppings, including mushrooms, tofu, fried tofu, seaweed, and seasonal tempura, offering a medley of flavors. To complement the meal, Bakumatsu Curry provides original drinks, including a sake all-you-can-drink option, inviting guests to fully immerse themselves in this new culinary adventure.
