Escape the Late Summer Heat: Edo Culture Experience at Gotenyama

Experience the Charm of Edo at Gotenyama Summer Escape

Mori Trust Corporation is excited to announce the "Gotenyama Late Summer ESCAPE! - Cooling Down with Edo Culture in Modern Times" event, set to take place on September 22 (Monday) and September 23 (Tuesday, holiday) at Gotenyama Trust City.

As the summer of 2025 saw record-breaking heat across Japan, this event aims to provide children and their families with an opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities while staying cool in the lush green surroundings of Gotenyama. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant cherry blossom viewing and cooling techniques of the Edo period, visitors will engage in exciting cultural experiences rooted in history.

Unique Cultural Experiences Await You

This summer experience features several engaging activities, including:

  • - Uchimizu Art: Participants will join to perform 'uchimizu' (water sprinkling), creating impressive street art that showcases illustrations of Gotenyama on the ground. With the dimensions measuring an impressive 20 meters in length and 16 meters in width, this art project will be one of the largest of its kind in Japan, highlighting a unique design inspired by Edo-era ukiyo-e artworks.

  • - Sudala Art Display: Reflecting on how people in Edo kept cool, the event will showcase sukenari (bamboo blinds) adorned with ukiyo-e prints. Attendees are also encouraged to contribute their artistic flair by drawing on these bamboo blinds, making for a memorable and personal touch to the decorations.

  • - Hiyako Gotenyama Chaya: True to the Edo language, where "hiyako" means “cool,” the event will feature free servings of traditional summer treats such as kakigori (shaved ice) and koji amazake (sweet fermented rice drink) for visitors to savor and cool off.

  • - Takiami Experience: Emulating the cooling practices of the Edo period, a 'takiami' (waterfall bathing) area will be set up where participants can experience the refreshing sensation of cascading water amidst a natural garden setting.

  • - Ice Pillar Art Display: Last but not least, the event will feature ice pillar art that encapsulates the summer and autumn flora, presenting a stunning visual representation of seasonal transitions.

A Look at Gotenyama’s Historical Significance

Gotenyama has a rich history dating back to the Edo period, having served as a post town along the Tōkaidō route. In the era of Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth shōgun of the Tokugawa shogunate, it was a place where anyone could enjoy seasonal nature. Illustrations from renowned ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige depict the area’s charm.

Even today, this historical region offers greenery amidst the hustle and bustle of modern-day Tokyo, making it a beloved oasis for locals and visitors alike.
