In a heartfelt exploration of China's rich ceramic heritage, American cultural ambassador Evan Kail recently visited Dehua County, located in Fujian Province, renowned for its exquisite Dehua porcelain. On March 19, 2025, Kail expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to witness the intricate production process of Dehua ceramics, which deepened his understanding of Chinese culture and artistry.

During his visit, Kail was particularly struck by the craftsmanship involved in creating what is known as 'Blanc de Chine' — a term referring to the signature white porcelain originating from Dehua. He noted that these ceramics are not purely artistic expressions but serve as crucial links in cultural exchanges between China and the world, illustrating the timeless relevance and appeal of this heritage.

Kail's connection to the region is further highlighted by his past endeavors, including the donation of a photobook that documented the behaviors of Japanese forces in China during World War II. In acknowledgment of his contributions, he was honored with a piece of Dehua porcelain, designated as a national gift, which he later showcased during China Media Group's Spring Festival Gala in 2025, introducing the beauty of these artworks to millions of viewers.

The Dehua porcelain industry is historically significant, having flourished on the Maritime Silk Road during the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368 AD). The county of Dehua has recognized its potential to promote these cultural treasures globally, with an annual ceramic output valued at an impressive 66.3 billion yuan (approximately 9.1 billion U.S. dollars). More than 60% of the ceramics produced are exported to over 190 countries and regions worldwide. To expand its market reach, Dehua has established numerous promotion and exhibition centers in destinations such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Malacca, as well as hosting international showcases in Malaysia, the UAE, and France.

Fang Junqin, the head of Dehua County, stated emphatically that the community is dedicated to capitalizing on its historical craftsmanship to build a greater global understanding of China. The continued evolution and recognition of Dehua porcelain not only highlight the artistic prowess of its creators but also underscore the role of these ceramics in an ever-evolving conversation about culture, diplomacy, and shared heritage.
