Okayama University Launches a Test Field for Autonomous Delivery Robots



In a significant move towards advancing mobility solutions, Okayama University has established a test field for autonomous delivery robots and small mobility vehicles in Kibichuo Town, Okayama Prefecture. The initiative aims to provide comprehensive support for participating companies and research institutions, facilitating tests that showcase the practical applications of these technologies.

Scheduled to run from September 1 to November 20, 2026, this project focuses on the unique challenges of operating in rural settings. Kibichuo Town is recognized as Japan's first "Digital Rural Health Special Zone" and faces pressing issues related to aging and accessibility to essential services such as shopping and healthcare. The town boasts wide sidewalks and a planned city layout, but it's the rugged terrain and infrastructural weaknesses that pose real-world challenges for the autonomous systems being tested.

Professor Takayo Hasei, who leads the initiative in collaboration with the university's various departments, emphasizes the importance of creating solutions that extend beyond the confines of a hospital. "While we have been advancing technology within hospital settings, we must also address the broader societal issues affecting mobility in rural regions. Our ultimate goal is to create a seamless transportation environment for both goods and people, enabling them to navigate smoothly from their homes to various destinations," stated Hasei.

The support provided during this project is extensive. Participants will benefit from access to 3D point cloud maps and GNSS self-location mapping, as well as enjoying assistance with police permission procedures, which Okayama University will handle. Storage facilities for the robots, outdoor workspaces, and accommodation assistance will also be available, ensuring that teams can focus entirely on the operation of their vehicles during the testing period.

The decision to develop the test field arose from the recognition that urban environments often do not replicate the complexities of rural areas where these technologies are needed most. The test site, characterized by slopes, gravel paths, and uneven terrain, allows for a rigorous examination of the robots' capabilities under challenging conditions that are not typically found in more urban settings.

As the deadline for enrollment approaches, interested companies and research institutions are encouraged to check the project's official site for more detailed information and application processes. The flexibility of scheduling and route adjustments during the test period makes participation a viable opportunity for organizations looking to explore the future of autonomous delivery mechanisms.
