Yunnan Power Grid Co., Ltd., a pivotal energy sector player in China's southwest, is on a mission to ensure efficient energy transmission through innovative technology. To address these challenges, Yunnan Power Grid has integrated Huawei's Super Packet Network (SPN) into its strategy, making it a significant component of its 14th and 15th five-year plans. Transformative Impact of SPN


Since its pilot project kicked off in 2022, the SPN has evolved from a mere technological trial into the backbone architecture of Yunnan province's energy network. Currently, as implementation extends to cities like Zhaotong and Pu'er, the comprehensive benefits of the next-gen network are becoming increasingly evident.

One of the most noteworthy improvements is the resolution of bandwidth bottlenecks. The SPN network eliminates previous limitations, increasing capacity from 155 Mbps to a remarkable 10 Gbps. Furthermore, equipment within this network boosts access capabilities at substations, power plants, and service centers to 1 Gbps, adhering to standards set by the China Southern Power Grid. The enhancement extends further to aggregation and core layers, which can scale up to 50 or even 100 Gbps depending on operational needs. This facilitates the use of narrow-band fiber optics for effective isolation of private transmission lines, thereby supporting high-bandwidth services like video surveillance across the power transmission network.

In addition to increased bandwidth, the network significantly augments operational efficiency in inspections and maintenance. Huawei’s SPN solution incorporates real-time monitoring capabilities for Service Level Agreements (SLAs), such as latency and packet loss, alongside fault localization within minutes. This advancement has led to a drastic reduction in maintenance-related costs, as evidenced by a remarkable decrease in one-time inspection durations at the Qujing Power Supply Bureau—reducing it from 30 minutes to just 3 minutes. Moreover, the total cycle time for maintenance tasks diminished from over 7 hours to merely 21 minutes.

With advanced monitoring systems in place, the operational teams are able to identify critical defects approximately 15 days earlier than before, enabling proactive servicing. Over a span of six months, field visits have fallen by over 45%, showcasing substantial efficiency improvements.

Enhanced Intelligence and Future Proofing


With the Huawei SPN solution, the smart service delivery in energy supply has reached new heights. This robust technology supports varied electricity supply services, ranging from delay-sensitive teleprotection to high-traffic video transmission, ensuring dependable data flow. The FlexE technology enables firm separation between service types while maximizing bandwidth reuse, thereby increasing operational efficiency.

The dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 also enhances local routing flexibility, paving the way for smoother Internet of Things (IoT) integration, essential for modern energy solutions. Services integrating monitoring systems for transmission lines become seamless in this upgraded framework, which is built to adapt to future demands.

Moreover, this system safeguards long-term investment returns, featuring evolution speeds that can leap from 25 Gbps to 400 Gbps through inexpensive upgrades, thus averting the need for extensive reconstruction.
