Overview
On February 21, 2026, Bunkyo Gakuin University will host a significant talk session titled ‘Our Future,’ focusing on the crucial topic of young carers in Fuchu City. The event, initiated by the non-profit organization Care Works, aims to enhance public awareness and support for young individuals who regularly care for family members under the age of 18.
Significance of Young Carers
Young carers are children and youths who take on responsibilities like caring for family members or managing daily tasks. Recently, the need for systematic support for these individuals has garnered attention as a pressing social issue. With the recent amendment of the Child and Youth Development Support Promotion Law, which officially acknowledges their existence, recognition of young carers is progressively improving. However, there remain significant gaps in support structures and outreach efforts.
Event Highlights
The talk session will feature Associate Professor Tamaki Nara from Bunkyo Gakuin University’s Human Welfare Studies Department as the facilitator. With years of experience in caregiving and related education, Professor Nara will dive into discussions about the current landscape of young carer support in Fuchu City and explore potential advancements in this realm. The event aims to gather insights from real experiences and foster a dialogue on improving local support systems.
Participants can look forward to a keynote speech by Eiko Horikoshi, the Executive Director of the Japan Carer Alliance, alongside engaging discussions involving caregivers and professionals from the education and welfare sectors in Fuchu. After the main event, an informal networking session for caregivers will serve as a platform for sharing experiences and building community connections.
