Knight-Hennessy Scholars Introduces Its Most Diverse Cohort of 2026 with 87 Global Scholars
The Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) program at Stanford University has proudly unveiled its 2026 cohort, comprising 87 new scholars—a group celebrated for its unprecedented global representation. This marks the ninth iteration of the KHS program, and it is based on a growing commitment to diversity that spans across 31 different countries. Notably, for the first time, scholars hailing from Croatia, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan are among the newest inductees into this elite program.
Knight-Hennessy Scholars is renowned for its multi-disciplinary approach to leadership development, with financial support that can extend up to three years for graduate studies at any of Stanford's seven schools. The program’s mission is to cultivate visionary, courageous, and collaborative leaders equipped to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Each scholar is empowered not just through funding but also through experiential learning that enhances their educational journey.
‘Every year, the Knight-Hennessy community strengthens by integrating diverse disciplines, nationalities, and perspectives,’ stated John L. Hennessy, the program's founding director and Stanford's former president. ‘As a result, our collective ability to address significant global issues also expands.’ This year’s cohort is particularly noteworthy, with 51% of the scholars holding passports from countries outside the United States. This statistic underscores the program's commitment to fostering a rich tapestry of global perspectives.
Among the cohort, an impressive 47% of American scholars identify as people of color, and around 9% have prior service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The educational backgrounds of these scholars are as diverse as their nationalities, with undergraduate degrees obtained from 58 different institutions, including 23 international colleges and 21 unfamiliar universities. Furthermore, 21% of these scholars are first-generation college graduates, highlighting the program's dedication to accessibility and equity in education.
This ninth cohort of Knight-Hennessy Scholars brings the total number of scholars in the program to 682 since its inception in 2018. Applications for the 2027 cohort will open on June 1, 2026, with a submission deadline set for October 6, 2026. Interested candidates will be able to participate in information sessions that introduce them to the scholarship community, leadership development program, and admission process. Importantly, the KHS program imposes no quotas or restrictions based on geography, educational institution, field of study, or career aspirations.
Inaugurated in 2016 and launched in 2018, the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program honors Phil Knight, a philanthropist and co-founder of Nike Inc., along with John Hennessy, the former president of Stanford and current chairman of Alphabet Inc. As the world’s largest fully-funded scholarship program, Knight-Hennessy Scholars continues to set the standard for excellence in education and leadership training.
