Chicago Teamsters Consider Strike Over Labor Rights Violations as Contract Deadline Approaches

As the clock ticks down to the expiration of the Master Parking Agreement on October 31, a significant vote is taking place today among nearly 1,200 members of Teamsters Local 727 across the Chicagoland area. The union is poised to authorize an unfair labor practice (ULP) strike against several parking operators, including well-known names such as SP Plus/Metropolis, LAZ Parking, and Interpark, among others. The decision to consider a strike emerges from ongoing frustrations over persistent violations of federal labor laws by these employers, coupled with their reluctance to engage in meaningful negotiations.

According to John T. Coli Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 727, the impact of these workers extends far beyond mere parking management. "Our members are the backbone of parking operations at key locations such as airports, hospitals, hotels, office buildings, and entertainment venues throughout the greater Chicagoland region,” he stated emphatically. The union’s frustration is palpable, as they have reported numerous instances of unfair labor practices ranging from refusal to bargain and failure to provide necessary information to reports of retaliation and unlawful surveillance.

Carolyn German, a steward with Teamsters Local 727, added, "People rely on us every day when they fly into Chicago, go to work, visit hospitals, or even attend a Bears game. We take immense pride in our work, which makes our fight for a fair contract that acknowledges our hard work and contributions all the more crucial." The collective sentiment of the members strongly signals that they will not let injustice go unchallenged.

The parking operators negotiate collectively through the Chicago Parking Association, but this assembly has faced increasing scrutiny as Local 727 has documented a range of contract violations. "We will not stand idly by while our rights are trampled upon. We expect these companies to take our demands seriously and engage in good-faith negotiations,” Coli Jr. concluded.

With nearly 10,000 hardworking individuals represented by Teamsters Local 727 in the Chicago area, this vote could mark a critical juncture, potentially impacting not just the members themselves but also the myriad people who depend on their services every day. This is not just about labor rights; it’s about recognizing the vital role these workers play in keeping Chicago's infrastructure running. As the union prepares for a possible strike, the stakes have never been higher for the members, who seek fair treatment and respect from their employers.

The resolution of this situation remains uncertain as conversations continue, but one thing is clear: the Teamsters Local 727 are prepared to stand up for their rights, reinforcing that their hard work and commitment deserve recognition and fair compensation.
