Teamsters Local 396 Celebrate New Contract Recognition in California
In a significant victory for labor rights and collective bargaining, a coalition of 700 Waste Management employees in Los Angeles and Orange counties has ratified an important new contract, as confirmed by Teamsters Local 396. This agreement not only reinforces their commitment to preserving workers' rights but also sets a high standard for the sanitation industry in Southern California.
This success comes on the heels of another victory, as more than 1,900 Teamsters from Local 396 managed to ratify their contract with Republic Services shortly before this milestone. The momentum generated by recent negotiations indicates a vital period for labor unions, showcasing their ability to fight back against corporate interests.
What the New Contract Means for Workers
Victor Mineros, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 396, commended the efforts of engaged Teamsters whose collective energy played an essential role in securing this robust agreement.
"Congratulations to the rank-and-file Teamsters whose engagement and energy were key to securing such a strong contract," stated Mineros. He further emphasized that there is still extensive work to be done, as Local 396 is actively pursuing new agreements with other haulers in the region to ensure all workers receive similar protections and respect in the workplace.
Among those employers are WARE Disposal, Athens Services, CRR, and Park Disposal, showing that the Teamsters' fight is ongoing and dedicated to improving conditions for a broader group of workers.
Solidarity in Adversity
Luis Isordia, a relief driver at Waste Management, highlighted the difficulties faced during these negotiations, particularly against such a substantial corporation.
"This win did not come easily. Waste Management is a massive corporation and has tons of money to throw around to try and weaken us and our union," Isordia explained. Yet, his remarks underscored an essential truth about union solidarity, stating, "But our employer's money was no match for Teamsters solidarity.” His pride in co-workers uniting for a common cause was evident and reinforced the union's long-standing principles of mutual support and respect.
Impact of Waste Management and Teamsters Union
Waste Management stands as the largest sanitation corporation in America, with reported earnings reaching $25.2 billion in the previous year, showcasing the enormous financial muscle these corporations wield. Nonetheless, the Teamsters Union, which serves over 1.3 million members across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, remains a staunch defender of labor rights. This recent achievement is a testament to the important role unions play in advocating for fair labor practices and improving conditions for workers across various sectors.
Founded over a century ago in 1903, The International Brotherhood of Teamsters continues to represent hardworking individuals and unite various workers towards common goals. With the ongoing efforts of local unions such as Local 396, there is hope for a more equitable future.
