Ian H. Solomon Appointed as New President and CEO of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund
On June 30, 2026, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) Board of Trustees made a significant decision to name Ian H. Solomon as the organization's eighth president and CEO. Solomon, who is expected to take up the role in September 2026, is currently serving as the dean of the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia.
Joseph Pierson, chair of the RBF Board of Trustees, expressed enthusiasm about Solomon's leadership, stating, "We are delighted that Ian Solomon will lead our 85-year-old family foundation into its next chapter." He emphasized Solomon's extensive experience in law, policymaking, and diplomacy, which aligns well with the RBF’s global mission. Solomon's skills in negotiation and problem-solving are seen as vital to navigating the complex challenges of our times.
Janai Nelson, a trustee of the RBF and president of the Legal Defense Fund, praised Solomon's approach during the selection process. She highlighted his openness and commitment to understanding diverse perspectives, noting that he embraces complexity—an essential trait for leading a global philanthropic organization facing a multitude of environmental, political, and economic issues.
Before his tenure at UVA, Solomon led his own international consulting practice. This had him working with various sectors, including businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits, focusing on conflict resolution and collaborative strategies. Furthermore, he has held several key positions in the federal government, notably as legislative counsel for then-Senator Barack Obama, and as the U.S. executive director for the World Bank Group.
Reflecting on his new role, Solomon stated, "I am honored by this opportunity to lead the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. I have long admired the Fund's commitment to the greater good, which has impacted many causes I deeply care about. I am motivated by the potential for collaboration among leaders both within and outside the organization in striving toward a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world."
Solomon’s appointment comes as Stephen Heintz announces his retirement after an outstanding 25-year tenure as RBF’s president and CEO. Heintz extended his congratulations to Solomon, expressing confidence in his abilities to guide the organization further towards impactful initiatives.
Founded in 1940 by the grandsons of John D. Rockefeller, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund is dedicated to advancing social change. Solomon's leadership comes at a crucial time as the RBF remains focused on fostering a sustainable future through innovative programs and collaborations across the globe.
