Newark Alliance Selects Solomon Steplight as New CEO to Lead Growth and Transformation

Newark Alliance Welcomes Solomon Steplight as New CEO

The Newark Alliance, a pivotal organization in fostering economic growth and collaboration in Newark, has appointed Solomon Steplight as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective September 8, 2026. This announcement marks a significant step for both the Alliance and the city, particularly at a time when Newark is experiencing major investments in infrastructure and technology, opening doors to numerous opportunities.

Steplight arrives with a wealth of experience, having previously served as the City Administrator of East Orange, New Jersey. In this role, he managed a substantial team of over 1,100 employees and a budget of approximately $180 million. His tenure in East Orange was notable for overseeing a colossal $2.5 billion development pipeline, showcasing his capability to lead transformative projects and navigate complex organizational challenges.

Reflecting on his new role, Steplight said, "Taking on this role is deeply personal for me. Growing up, Newark was where I first connected with diverse cultures and robotics—experiences that shaped my interest in building and improving complex systems. Newark has never lacked talent, creativity, or ambition. The opportunity before us now is to connect those assets to bring together technology, business, government, universities, culture, and community."

Steplight’s deep-rooted connections to Newark and his understanding of the city's unique landscape position him well to steer the Newark Alliance into its next chapter. Furthermore, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka praised his appointment, highlighting Steplight's extensive knowledge of the city and effective leadership. Baraka emphasized the importance of building strong collaborations across multiple sectors to enhance Newark's economic revitalization.

One of the key goals of the Newark Alliance under Steplight’s leadership will be to facilitate the convergence of public, private, and nonprofit interests to maximize the opportunities arising from Newark's current growth momentum. As investments pour in and the local economy evolves, it is essential for the Alliance to ensure that the benefits reach the city's residents, enabling job creation and enhancing community well-being.

In addition to his role in East Orange, Steplight has also held senior positions in Newark, where he was instrumental in advancing significant initiatives, expanding broadband access, and contributing to the municipal budgeting process. His unique blend of experience combines public service know-how with a strong commitment to community advocacy, making him an ideal leader for this crucial position.

Moreover, Steplight’s work in the nonprofit sector, notably as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Girls Who Code, showcases his capability in scaling organizations effectively. This experience proves vital as the Newark Alliance aims to expand its influence and foster economic growth throughout the city.

Steplight’s academic credentials include a bachelor’s and a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He also serves on the boards of Braven and Montclair Kimberley Academy, reflecting his commitment to educational initiatives and community development.

The Newark Alliance consists of Newark's prominent businesses, educational institutions, and community partners, including Fortune 100 and 500 companies. Together, they strive to enhance the socioeconomic landscape of Newark, ensuring inclusivity and prosperity for all residents.

Looking ahead, Steplight’s vision for the Newark Alliance encompasses not only economic growth but also the cultivation of a vibrant, resilient community that thrives on diversity and collaboration. As Newark stands at the precipice of significant change, Steplight’s leadership is poised to harness the city’s potential, turning challenges into opportunities for all residents.
