Petrokimia Gresik Launches Ambitious Energy Transition Program for a Sustainable Future
Petrokimia Gresik Launches Energy Transition Program
At the recent COP29 international forum held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Petrokimia Gresik unveiled an ambitious energy transition program aimed at supporting global decarbonization initiatives. This Agroindustry Solutions company, part of Pupuk Indonesia, emphasizes the importance of reducing carbon emissions, addressing one of the most critical issues of our era.
Commitment to Decarbonization
Dwi Satriyo Annurogo, the President Director of Petrokimia Gresik, expressed the company's confidence in achieving substantial emission reductions through its comprehensive plan spanning from 2024 to 2030. During his speech at the conference, Annurogo stated, "Petrokimia Gresik has long been intensifying its decarbonization program as part of our commitment to supporting Pupuk Indonesia's vision of becoming a leader in the green industry."
These efforts align with an initiative led by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to enhance national food security while striving for Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060.
Key Initiatives of the 2024 Energy Transition Program
As part of the 2024 energy transition program, Petrokimia Gresik is making significant changes to its operational systems. This includes transitioning the energy source for the Furnace and Burner System of the Phonska V Plant from coal to natural gas. Moreover, the company is initiating the adoption of electric vehicles within its fleet, introducing 180 electric motorcycles and eight electric cars, complete with charging stations. This year also saw the introduction of two electric forklifts and one electric wheel loader, which together are expected to decrease emissions by 22%.
Future Plans: Decarbonization Roadmap 2025-2030
Looking ahead, Petrokimia Gresik has articulated a Decarbonization Roadmap for the years 2025 to 2030. Significant initiatives planned include further transitioning the Furnace at the Phonska IV Plant to natural gas and converting heating processes in the Sulfuric Acid II Plant from fuel oil to gas. In addition to these pivotal changes, the company aims to co-fire with biomass and develop a Hybrid Green Ammonia Plant alongside a Soda Ash Plant, among other environmentally friendly initiatives.
During his presentation, Annurogo reiterated the company's commitment to promoting Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) through their operations. He assured the audience that these initiatives not only comply with international emission regulations but also yield substantial reductions in carbon output. He stated, "The consistent decarbonization efforts from 2025 to 2030 will result in approximately 31.89% less emissions."
Targets for Carbon Emissions
Petrokimia Gresik has set a target to limit carbon emissions to just 41,000 tons by 2060, significantly below the maximum authorized limit of 132,000 tons stipulated by the Net Zero Emissions (NZE) program. This ambitious approach showcases Petrokimia Gresik's dedication to building a sustainable future and positioning itself as a leader in the agroindustry while actively participating in global climate action.
The presentation at COP29 marks a significant milestone for Petrokimia Gresik as it collaborates with other global leaders to develop workable solutions that tackle climate change and promote a more sustainable way of life.
