SOXAI Partners with The University of Tokyo for Innovative Research
In a groundbreaking initiative, SOXAI, led by its president Tatsuhiro Watanabe, has officially signed a collaboration agreement with The University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Education. This partnership is focused on the development of advanced smart ring technology specifically designed for monitoring sleep, behavior, and physiological conditions.
Background of the Collaboration
For several years, SOXAI has been working closely with Professor Yoshiharu Yamamoto, a visiting scholar at The University of Tokyo, to advance research in sleep and physiological monitoring utilizing smart ring technology. This new collaborative research agreement aims to build on those prior endeavours, propelling the development of algorithms and architectures for smart ring devices that enable natural monitoring of sleep, behaviors, and physiological states in everyday settings.
Through the research environment at The University of Tokyo, the collaboration will leverage measurement data to refine algorithms and validate the precision of the devices being developed by SOXAI. The insights gained from practical experiments will also contribute to establishing predictive indicators for health risks through the smart ring technology.
Research and Development Structure
To facilitate this collaborative research, SOXAI will set up a satellite research and development hub at the university's laboratory. This strategic location will enhance its research efforts in conjunction with The University of Tokyo’s academic community.
The research team will include experts like Professor Yoshiharu Yamamoto, who has a strong background in bioinformatics and health information science, and Associate Professor Satoshi Kishi, who specializes in mental health and sleep science. Professor Yamamoto, an alumnus of The University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Education, has contributed significantly to the field since 1993. He has held various prestigious positions, including serving as a professor of physical education until his retirement in March 2026, subsequently becoming a visiting professor within the same department. His expertise spans educational physiology, health informatics, stress management, and the visualization of health data to identify potential health risks. Additionally, Kishi, who will commence his role at The University of Tokyo on April 1, 2026, brings a wealth of knowledge in mental health and sleep science.
By integrating the specialized knowledge from both professors, the collaboration seeks to elevate smart ring technology to new heights in physical and behavioral health monitoring.
Addressing Societal Challenges
Recent workforce reform initiatives and a greater emphasis on health management have made it crucial for businesses to address employee sleep deprivation and improve sleep quality. According to surveys by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, about 30% of the working population is not getting adequate rest, leading to issues such as decreased productivity and rising healthcare costs.
The joint research aims to confront these societal problems associated with sleep debt by creating scientifically-backed solutions.
Achievements and Future Aspirations
As the only domestic smart ring company in Japan that has prioritized collaborative research from its inception, SOXAI has been committed to evidence-based product development. In 2025, they validated high-precision sleep stage estimation through joint research with The University of Tokyo and the University of Essex, resulting in a paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. The current partnership is set to facilitate further innovations, enabling SOXAI to offer products and services that address Japan's pressing health challenges, particularly in sleep.
By applying the research findings from this collaboration, SOXAI intends to develop more accurate sleep and physiological monitoring technologies. This aligns with their vision of integrating health care into lifestyle, ultimately promoting overall well-being.
