Exploring Cultural Perspectives at RMCAD's Symposium: Unpacking RECONTEXTUALIZE
RMCAD's 6th Annual Student Research Symposium
Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design (RMCAD) is excited to announce the upcoming 6th Annual Student Research Symposium at the Denver Art Museum, scheduled for March 6, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. MT. This year, the theme is "RECONTEXTUALIZE," inviting students and alumni to delve into how changing cultural, historical, and material perspectives influence their roles as artists and researchers.
The symposium promises to be a dynamic event, where participants will present their work and engage with the public in meaningful discussions on the impact of context in art and design. Admission to the museum for the day will be free, making this an enriching opportunity for everyone involved. Registration for the event closes on March 3, 2026. For those unable to attend in person, the presentations will be available for virtual viewing via a live stream.
In addition to the symposium at the Denver Art Museum, the excitement continues at RMCAD’s campus, specifically in the Rotunda Gallery. The Recontextualize 6th Annual Student Symposium Exhibition will run from March 2 until May 22, showcasing student work that reflects the theme.
Dr. Kat Medill, Assistant Professor of Art History at RMCAD, expressed the importance of such events for student development: "Events like these are vital to the growth of RMCAD students because they provide a professional stage where research becomes a lived experience. It allows them to see their work as part of a larger, synergistic dialogue, preparing them to enter the professional world not just as creators, but as critical thinkers and thought leaders."
Founded in 1963, RMCAD has established itself as a key institution for aspiring artists, offering degrees in various disciplines, including illustration, interior design, animation, and fashion design. The college advocates for a flexible learning environment, providing both on-campus and online education options that cater to the busy schedules of its students. Professors at RMCAD are actively engaged in the art world, ensuring students receive not only academic but real-world insights and connections.
As the event approaches, there’s a palpable excitement among students and faculty alike, as they prepare to showcase their research and creativity. This year’s theme, "RECONTEXTUALIZE," urges participants to reflect on their artistic practices and how their backgrounds influence their work. By shifting perspectives, students can explore new narratives and interconnectivity, hallmarks of the ongoing dialogue within the arts community.
The RMCAD Symposium represents a culmination of hard work, dedication, and passion. It’s more than just a presentation; it's a celebration of creativity and a testament to the importance of context in the artistic process. The blending of theoretical perspectives with practical applications in art makes this a unique platform for emerging artists.
For those interested in attending, it is encouraged to register promptly before the deadline. Whether you participate in person at the Denver Art Museum or tune in online, this symposium promises to offer valuable insights into the evolving nature of art and design in our contemporary world. The exploration of "RECONTEXTUALIZE" aims to inspire attendees to think critically and engage with art in new and diverse ways, fostering a vibrant community of thinkers and creators.
