Rwanda Celebrates Completion of Smart Education Project and DigiTruck Launch
Rwanda's Digital Education Revolution
On October 3, 2025, Rwanda's Ministry of Education joined hands with Huawei to celebrate the completion of the first phase of the Smart Education Project and unveil the innovative DigiTruck initiative at Kagarama Secondary School in Kigali. This grand event signifies not just a milestone in the digital transformation of Rwanda's education sector but also underscores the country's commitment to equipping its populace with essential digital skills.
A Vision of Inclusive Education
Joseph Nsengimana, Rwanda's Minister of Education, emphasized that the event transcended a mere ceremony. It is a testament to Rwanda's unwavering dedication to inclusive and technology-driven education. The Smart Education Project has already connected over 1,500 schools to high-speed internet, established two state-of-the-art data centers, and laid the groundwork for a dedicated educational network that supports digital teaching and learning nationwide.
Aligned with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the National Transformation Strategy, this initiative aims to facilitate Rwanda's transition into a globally competitive knowledge-based economy. With the successful completion of this phase, nearly 1.5 million students across Rwanda—both in urban Kigali and remote rural communities—will now have equitable access to high-quality educational resources. “A student in Kigali can now share knowledge with peers in Rusizi. This is the true impact of digital inclusion—bridging distances, breaking barriers, and giving every child the chance to dream big,” shared Jin Jiqing, CEO of Huawei Technologies in Rwanda.
Introducing DigiTruck
In addition to the Smart Education Project, the DigiTruck initiative was launched to deliver free, personalized digital skills training to underserved communities. This project specifically targets youths, girls, and out-of-school farmers. Equipped with laptops, internet access, and digital learning devices, the DigiTruck serves as a mobile classroom powered by solar energy. It can reach remote areas of Rwanda where internet access and electrical supply are limited, with expert instructors ready to provide training on-site.
**Eraste Rurangwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, highlighted, “Initiatives like DigiTruck are more than just technology; they are gateways to opportunity, empowerment, and the future of Rwanda as a knowledge-driven economy.
