Innovative Horizontal Recycling of Carpet Tiles Achieves 67.78 Million Square Meters

Innovative Carpet Tile Recycling

The Refineverse Group, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has recently announced a significant milestone in the world of sustainability. By 2025, the company expects to achieve a remarkable total of 67.78 million square meters of carpet tile recycling. This success is not just a number; it's a testament to the innovative horizontal recycling approach that has been in development for nearly two decades.

Understanding Horizontal Recycling of Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles, commonly used in office and commercial spaces, are composite materials consisting of a textile layer bonded with a resin layer, making recycling a daunting task. For many years, the majority of these tiles ended up in landfills. However, the Refineverse Group has taken on this challenge by creating a recycling methodology that transforms discarded carpet tiles back into usable carpet through the creation of a recycled material called “Refine Powder.”

With the increasing importance of sustainability in business practices and the growing demand for effective waste management, particularly from office renovations, the need for carpet tile recycling has surged. The solution provided by Refineverse addresses these societal demands, achieving the remarkable figure that equals the area of approximately 1,450 Tokyo Domes, reinforcing the company's commitment to environmentally friendly practices.

Expanding the Recycling Initiative

Currently, the horizontal recycling efforts are focused primarily in the Tokyo metropolitan area, with around 50% of carpet tiles already undergoing the recycling process. Collecting discarded carpet tiles is facilitated through partnerships with GMS, a group company, along with industrial waste management contractors. The collected materials are taken to the Refineverse Chiba Factory located in Yachiyo City, Chiba Prefecture, where they are processed into Refine Powder.

This Refine Powder serves as a raw material for various carpet tile manufacturers, allowing for new tiles to be produced from recycled material. The process remarkably reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 96% compared to using virgin materials, making it an appealing option for companies striving to build eco-friendly offices.

The Vision of Refineverse Group

Refineverse Group embodies the principle of creating connections to wealth in the future through unique perspectives and technologies. The company has been at the forefront of circular economy practices for over 20 years, developing and reclaiming various materials. Their commitment to recycling includes the transformation of waste fishing nets and automobile airbags into high-quality recycled nylon pellets known as “REAMIDE,” as well as experimenting with new bioplastics utilizing bird feathers called “ReFEZER.” They’re also working on producing asphalt modifiers from recycled automotive interior materials under the brand “REOCA” and creating recycled rubber materials branded as “RENAMY.”

Through these diverse recycling initiatives, Refineverse Group not only provides innovative solutions to material waste but contributes to creating a circular economy where materials have new value and purpose.
