El Sistema Japan Launches Crowdfunding for Christmas Concert
El Sistema Japan, an organization based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has embarked on an exciting crowdfunding journey aimed at sustaining the activities of the Tokyo Children's Ensemble. This initiative started on July 17 and seeks funds to support the choir's inclusive concert on Christmas Day, December 25.
The Tokyo Children's Ensemble is a unique choral group that embraces children of all abilities, including those with visual impairments. Their mission is to promote inclusivity through the joy of singing, fostering an environment that welcomes every child willing to participate. The upcoming concert will take place at the National Olympic Memorial Youth Center and will feature special guests, including the senior choir 'Hinohara Shigemei Memorial New Elderly Society' and baritone singer Masamitsu Miyamoto.
Continuing a Legacy
Originally launched in 2017 under the name 'Tokyo White Hand Chorus', this choir has evolved over the years, focusing on creating harmony and joy through music. In 2022, the ensemble embraced a more inclusive approach, allowing visually impaired children to join and fostering a spirit of unity among all participants. The choir has gained international recognition, with invitations to perform at expos and summer camps abroad, further developing their vocal skills and broadening their horizons.
Unfortunately, the Tokyo Children's Ensemble is facing a financial shortfall as they move forward. They rely heavily on funding from cultural institutions, which will conclude in fiscal year 2026. The ensemble needs approximately 7 million yen for its activities and performances, of which 3 million yen (the secondary goal being 5 million yen) will be raised through this crowdfunding initiative.
How the Funds Will Be Used
The contributions collected will cover concert production costs, including venue hire and staging fees, as well as the annual operating expenses of the choir, such as instructor payments, the production of braille lyrics, and professional oversight.
Supporter Rewards
Contributors to the campaign can expect various rewards for their generosity, including:
- - Pochi bags made from recycled braille paper,
- - Special Christmas scarves created for the ensemble,
- - Personalized birthday song videos featuring Masamitsu Miyamoto and the children,
- - Tours to observe the choir's activities, available in regions including Tokyo, Soma, Komagane, and Maizuru. Additionally, sponsorship opportunities for corporations and organizations are also available.
Voices of Support
Several prominent journalists have stepped forward to support the Tokyo Children's Ensemble. Journalist Akira Ikegami commented, “The pure voices of these diverse children bring us solace and hope for tomorrow. I support them wholeheartedly.” Similarly, Yuri Masuda remarked, “The choir's invigorating and bright sound leaves no room for the notion of disability. Their true essence of diversity teaches us valuable lessons, and I am proud to support their endeavors.”

The crowdfunding campaign runs from July 17 until September 14, via the platform READYFOR. The Christmas concert, featuring the ensemble and its guests, will be held at the National Olympic Memorial Youth Center on December 25. Media outlets are encouraged to document the fundraising journey and the ongoing activities of the Tokyo Children's Ensemble.
