The Impressive Comeback of Jaripan
Mikado, a long-established bakery that regrettably closed its doors in March 2023, has made a remarkable return through business succession. With the re-launch of its signature product, Jaripan, in November 2024, Mikado has now surpassed 100,000 sales within just eight months. The company, operated by Egumi Culture Co., Ltd., based in Shibuya, Tokyo, has established a robust operation for both retail and wholesale sales.
A Legacy of Handcrafted Quality
The essence of Mikado lies in its commitment to handcrafted production. Nearly every piece of Jaripan is meticulously made by hand, showcasing the bakery's dedication to quality. By the end of July 2025, the total sales have reached an impressive 104,883 pieces, broken down as follows:
- - Retail Sales: 81,527 units (77.7%)
- - Wholesale Sales (including events): 23,356 units (22.3%)
The strategic growth observed during this period has been nothing short of remarkable. The bakery launched wholesale operations earlier than originally planned, which has contributed significantly to its success.
Strategic Growth Through Adaptation
The graph below illustrates monthly sales figures from November 2023 to July 2025, showcasing the transition from in-store sales to wholesale distribution.
Initially, Mikado planned for wholesale to emerge in the following years, but the team recognized the need to kickstart these operations right from the first year of business. This proactive approach meant preparing for external sales while stabilizing in-store operations.
Although launching wholesale was slightly delayed by two months compared to the original schedule, the bakery launched these activities during what is typically considered a slow period in the bakery industry—summer. This strategic timing ensured a smooth transition from retail to wholesale sales, optimizing the overall balance of the business.
A Word From the CEO
Shinpei Otsu, the representative director of Egumi Culture Co., Ltd., expressed gratitude for the support received over the past eight months. He stated, "Thanks to the numerous customers who have supported us, we have been able to exceed the 100,000 sales milestone. This achievement underscores our commitment to Jaripan and Mikado, treasured by so many. We will strive to introduce this gem from Miyazaki to even more people."
Future Challenges and Opportunities
Looking forward, Mikado plans to expand its retail outlets further within Miyazaki Prefecture and is also exploring options for nationwide distribution through frozen direct sales. The aim is to accelerate operations for the next stage of growth, ensuring that Jaripan reaches customers across the country.
