Explore Hachioji: A Walking Tour Through its Rich History and Art
On November 29, a unique walking tour will offer participants a deep dive into Hachioji's historical and contemporary craftsmanship, rooted in its rich heritage. The tour will take you through Nakano Kamimachi, a district once known for its silk production during the early Meiji period, which housed Japan's leading silk factory. Here, you will discover the legacy of manufacturing that continues to thrive in the area.
The tour invites you to explore the historical Japanese Machinery Industry Co., Ltd. Hachioji Factory, a site that typically remains closed to the public. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit advanced dyeing workshops and admire modern art installations that relate to the fabric and textile industry. This engaging experience blends history with local craftsmanship, led by knowledgeable guides who will provide insights through interactive trivia and storytelling ranging across various topics related to Hachioji’s artistic legacy and manufacturing prowess.
This event uniquely includes participation from Yusuke Mishima, a local guide born in 1984 in Hino, who now resides in Nakano Kamimachi. His volunteer efforts in organizing factory tours and walking events stem from his passion for showcasing local artisans and understanding the community’s history through immersive engagement. With a background in geography from university, Mishima offers a unique perspective on the historical narratives of the region, framing the tours through an educational lens.
The tour will be divided into several segments, engaging around 30 participants each time. Each segment will feature a variety of fabrication sites, culminating in a memorable experience where attendees will receive a special fabric memento crafted in Nakano Kamimachi. Set to run from 9:00 AM to 12:40 PM, the tour starts at the entrance of the Japanese Machinery Industry Hachioji Factory, conveniently located 2 minutes on foot from the Nakano bus stop along Akigawa Avenue.
A nominal fee of 2,000 yen will be charged, but the tour is free for middle school children accompanied by a guardian. Payment will be collected in cash upon arrival. Pre-registration is encouraged, available through the dedicated link, but last-minute participants are also welcome depending on availability.
This walking tour is part of the broader Hachioji Arts Festival, which began in 2023, showcasing local history, nature, and culture through diverse art forms across various venues, including heritage sites and modern facilities.
