Expanding Educational Horizons in Manhattan
The For A Bright Future Foundation (FABF), directed by philanthropist Louis Hernandez Jr., is on a mission to transform financial literacy within Manhattan's 50 public high schools. Their latest initiative, the
NextGen Finance Lab, is set to launch this fall, expanding upon a successful pilot program at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School.
Overview of the Initiative
This initiative is aimed at underserved youth, with the objective of enhancing their understanding of financial management and entrepreneurship through a project-based curriculum. Under the direction of Superintendent Gary Beidleman and the Manhattan High School District Team, FABF is introducing eight high schools to this innovative program, with plans for further expansion in subsequent semesters.
“Here at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, we witnessed the incredible impact of this program firsthand,” shared Principal Manuel A. Ureña. “Students emerged from the ‘Pitch Like A Dragon’ event more confident and articulate, fully equipped to take control of their financial futures. I’m thrilled that this successful model can now benefit more students across Manhattan.”
Program Details
The NextGen Finance Lab integrates the
Dave Ramsey Financial Literacy curriculum with an ecosystem of mentorship in financial technology (FinTech). Participants will learn essential skills in budgeting, saving, debt elimination, investing, and entrepreneurship. Students are paired with professionals in the FinTech industry, affording them invaluable insights into banking, digital transactions, investments, and potential career paths.
A highlight of the program is the
‘Pitch Like A Dragon’ competition, where student teams present their business and FinTech innovations to a panel comprising experienced leaders from the industry, venture capitalists, and local business experts. Scholarships are awarded to the standout teams, lending a competitive edge to the learning experience.
Collective Efforts for Positive Change
Gina Rogoto, SVP of Operations and Programs at FABF, noted that this expansion is emblematic of the significant change that can occur when nonprofits, educational institutions, and industry partners unite for a common goal. “The pilot at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis has directly influenced the curriculum and event format we are now implementing in other schools. It’s remarkable how one school’s success can pave the way for thousands more.”
With expert guidance from former Senior Deputy Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education, the program can be tailored to align with each school’s individual academic vision.
The first cohort of schools launching the NextGen Finance Lab includes:
- - Leadership and Public Service High School
- - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School
- - High School for Law and Public Service
- - Murry Bergtraum High School for Business Careers
- - High School of Fashion Industries
- - Hudson High School of Learning Technologies
- - Mott Hall High School Finance Lab Program
- - Food and Finance High School
Long-Term Aspirations
FABF aims to implement the NextGen Finance Lab across all 50 high schools over the next few semesters, allowing students a thorough preparation for future financial endeavors. Benson Porter, Chairman of the NextGen Finance Lab program, highlighted, “Having spent my career in financial services, I’ve seen the immense difference early exposure to these concepts can make for young people. This program not only educates students about money but also instills the entrepreneurial mindset needed to generate real ideas and accept constructive criticism.”
