A Heartfelt Art Journey in Omotesando
HIDERU (Hideaki Tanaka), a painter and art educator, is set to host a solo exhibition titled "Together with the Black Cat: A Journey to Find a Place in the World" at Omotesando's Gallery Dojun-kai from July 9 to July 14, 2026. This enchanting event aims to reach out to children struggling with absenteeism and feelings of loneliness, promoting the message that "you are not alone".
Recent statistics from Japan's Ministry of Education revealed that over 350,000 elementary and middle school students are presently dealing with school absenteeism, the highest figure recorded to date. Additionally, around 40% of teenagers aged 16 and above have reported experiencing feelings of isolation. In an era marked by the rise of social media and AI, children often find it challenging to connect, as they navigate a world filled with anxiety and isolation. Drawing from his own experiences of feeling isolated and finding solace in art during his childhood, HIDERU aims to convey to young audiences that pursuing their passions can help broaden their world.
Exploration Through Art
The exhibition transforms the gallery into an immersive narrative experience, inviting visitors to walk through an illustrated storybook, essentially embodying the journey of a brave little black cat as it ventures from loneliness into the vibrant world outside. As it encounters diverse characters and colorful landscapes, the black cat learns to expand its horizons, ultimately arriving at a serene place where it can be authentic and at peace. HIDERU hopes attendees will connect with the black cat's journey, taking the opportunity to reflect on their own search for a place of belonging, and perhaps finding joy in moments of creativity and connection.

The Innovative "Digital Chigiri-e"
HIDERU's distinct technique, termed "Digital Chigiri-e," involves reconstructing traditional Japanese paper tearing art digitally before applying final touches with acrylic paint, gold leaf, and glitter. This synthesis of analog and digital art results in warm, vibrant visuals, portraying the need for depth, human touch, and serendipity in an age dominated by AI.
A Personal Motivation
As the head of an art school for children in Nakameguro, HIDERU has been exposed to the voices of children and parents facing difficulties due to school absenteeism and feelings of unease.
