National Survey Reveals Parents' Strong Support for Financial Education in Schools

National Survey Shows Parental Support for Financial Education

A new national survey conducted by Everfi reveals substantial parental backing in favor of financial institutions playing a pivotal role in enhancing financial education for students. The findings highlight a growing consensus among parents about the importance of financial literacy in preparing children for adulthood.

Key Findings from the Survey

According to the survey, 79% of parents trust financial institutions that offer financial education, and 76% believe these institutions have a responsibility to contribute positively to their communities. This insight underscores the vital role that banks and credit unions can play in fostering financial knowledge among young people, shaping how parents view these organizations and their commitment to their families.

Ray Martinez, CEO of Everfi, stated, "Parents are telling financial institutions that financial education is a part of how they judge an organization's commitment to their families and communities." This sentiment indicates that engaging with financial education could foster deeper trust and enduring community relationships between financial institutions and families.

A High Demand for Financial Education

Parents overwhelmingly regard financial education as a fundamental component of a child's educational experience. Approximately 88% of parents advocate for personal finance courses to be mandatory for high school graduation, while 87% believe that money management is just as crucial as core subjects like reading and mathematics.

However, despite this clear demand, access to financial education remains inconsistent across the nation. Although 30 states currently mandate a standalone personal finance course for high schoolers, only 63% of parents are aware of their local school’s financial education requirements. Only 61% of respondents reported that their child had received any form of financial education at their school.

Bridging the Gap Between Demand and Access

These findings present a remarkable opportunity for financial institutions to collaborate with schools and community organizations to bridge the gap between parental expectations and students' access to financial education. By working together, these partnerships can promote greater financial literacy among students, equipping them with the necessary skills to make informed economic decisions.

Katrina B., a parent from Virginia whose child completed an Everfi financial course, expressed the importance of such educational experiences. She noted, "Organizations and companies play an important role in supporting educational opportunities for students by connecting classroom learning with the realities of professional life. Even one experience can inspire a student to pursue paths they might not have considered otherwise."
