Transforming Biodiversity into Impactful Businesses

In a groundbreaking endeavor to harness the rich biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest, the Institute for Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Amazon (Idesam) has announced an international challenge known as the Amazon Bioinnovation Challenge. This initiative aims to convert deep scientific knowledge about the region's biodiversity into viable products and impact-driven businesses.

Application Details

The call for applications is open until June 30, 2026, welcoming scientists, researchers, and innovators from various sectors including cosmetics, food, and plant-based materials. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between cutting-edge science and local, traditional knowledge to develop solutions that provide economic value while simultaneously conserving the rainforest and supporting local Amazonian communities.

As explained by Paulo Simonetti, Head of Open Innovation and ESG at Idesam, “The challenge is about transforming scientific knowledge into concrete solutions that allow us to preserve forests while creating sustainable economic opportunities.”

Six Areas of Action

The program is structured around six key areas of action. These include:
1. Development of biomaterials sourced from natural rubber.
2. Utilization of by-products from açaí.
3. Promotion of innovation using Amazonian oils such as andiroba, copaíba, and buriti.

Idesam will initially select 25 R&D specialists and 25 innovators, who will then compete in a two-week on-site residency in the Amazon. This experience includes activities in Manaus and surrounding communities, with all associated costs covered by the organization.

Financial and Technical Support

Participants chosen for this immersive experience will benefit from extensive financial and technical support. R&D specialists may receive monthly grants ranging from $650 to $1,300 over six months, along with access to laboratory facilities and mentorship. Each team will also be allocated around $20,000 to conduct trials and validation of their solutions.

Moreover, three winning teams will receive prizes ranging from $20,000 to $40,000, in addition to continued support for the development of their businesses. This includes legal guidance, market access, and investment network opportunities, ensuring their projects thrive beyond the contest.
