Masato Yamaguchi's 'SELFY' Exhibition: A Modern Exploration of Portraiture
From August 7 to September 7, 2026, PARCO Co., Ltd. will host a remarkable solo exhibition by one of the leading contemporary artists, Masato Yamaguchi, at the PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO. This exhibition, marking the fifth anniversary of Yamaguchi's influential 'SELFY' series, aims to redefine the concept of portraiture in today's society. The event will capture the essence of Shibuya, known for its chaotic street culture that has flourished since the 1990s, and its modern offshoot—selfies, or 'SELFY,' which raises the question, 'Why are selfies relevant now?'
The exhibition will feature new artwork inspired by model Eiza Ikeda and celebrate Yamaguchi's past collaborations with various celebrities. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to engage with the artwork through the innovative interpretations and displays characteristic of PARCO.

Evaluation of Masato Yamaguchi
Yamaguchi's depictions of women evoke a sense of familiarity, drawing parallels to the daily flood of images on social media. His art often features young women striking poses typical of the 'Instagram culture,' evoking a shared consciousness that transcends individual identities. This resonance creates a bridge between his work and iconic representations like Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe, reflecting broader themes within contemporary Asian culture.
In an age where the boundaries between reality and the virtual world blur, Yamaguchi adeptly captures the complexities of modern existence, questioning what reality truly is.
