Exploring Shanghai’s Innovation Ecosystem: Insights from Gen Z Students

In July 2025, the Antai Global Summer Program (AGSP) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University opened its doors to more than 80 students from 28 premier universities across 22 countries. This initiative aimed to provide these Gen Z participants with a close-up experience of Shanghai's dynamic innovation environment. The program emphasized experiential learning and sought to document these experiences through a multimedia project titled "Gen Z Perspectives on Shanghai's Sci-Tech Innovation."

The immersive program included visits to notable sites showcasing advancements in science and technology, with each location offering students a deeper understanding of China's technological landscape. The first stop on the itinerary was Medmotion, a facility dedicated to AI-enhanced rehabilitation technologies. Here, students witnessed cutting-edge devices that integrate motion tracking and data analytics to create personalized training systems. This encounter sparked lively discussions about the future of digital health and the transformative potential of AI in healthcare.

Next, the group traveled to Bright Dairy, where they explored a state-of-the-art automated dairy plant. The facility’s AI-driven production lines, coupled with strict digital quality controls, illustrated how technology can enhance safety and sustainability in food production. A student expressed awe at the technological prowess evident in the modern industrial environment, stating, "It's so advanced—tech is clearly at the heart of modern Chinese industry."

A visit to ZPMC was the highlight of the program, where students observed innovative, automated port cranes that are instrumental in global trade logistics. With over 70% of the world's major ports utilizing these zero-emission cranes, students gained insights into how automation is reshaping supply chains and environmental impacts.

The final stop was the Shanghai International Circuit, known for hosting the F1 Chinese Grand Prix. Here, students not only experienced the thrills of motorsport culture but also delved into engineering excellence and operational strategies that illustrate the fast-paced, high-tech spirit of Shanghai.

Throughout these visits, students were able to identify how various sectors—healthcare, food production, heavy industry, and sports—intersect through the key themes of AI, automation, and sustainability. The AGSP not only encourages academic learning but also fosters a cross-cultural dialogue that helps dispel stereotypes. One of the program organizers noted, "When young minds see, touch, and discuss technology together, stereotypes fade and real understanding grows."

The overarching theme of this initiative was to explore "The Sci-Tech City of Shanghai Through a Gen Z Lens." By integrating elements of high-quality development, synergy between education and technology, and cross-cultural communication, the program aims to empower young individuals with insights into the forces shaping the future. The documented experiences are intended to inspire not just participants but also audiences worldwide, fostering an understanding that bridges China’s innovation with global youth perspectives.

In conclusion, AGSP’s efforts to connect international youth with Shanghai's innovation ecosystem present an invaluable opportunity for mutual learning and collaboration. As these young minds return to their home countries, they carry with them not just knowledge of advanced technologies but also a clearer vision of how collaborative innovation can address global challenges, equipping them to contribute meaningfully to the world. By documenting these exchanges, AGSP paves the way for future generations to engage with technology and innovation in a profound and impactful way.
