AVAIO Digital Takes Major Step Forward with New AI-Ready Data Hub in Algete, Madrid

AVAIO Digital Expands into Spain with New Data Hub

AVAIO Digital recently marked a pivotal moment in its expansion plans by announcing its first data hub in Spain, strategically positioned in Algete, a town within the Madrid Community. This development is significant as it underscores Madrid's rapid ascent as a tech capital, particularly in fields such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI).

With an impressive investment of 650 million euros, the hub aims to not only bolster the local economy but also stimulate job creation, with projections suggesting that around 500 jobs will be generated during the construction phase and an additional 50 permanent positions once operational.

Mark McComiskey, the CEO of AVAIO Digital, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Madrid is a leading European hub for cloud computing and AI development, and we are thrilled to partner with the city of Algete to significantly invest in the region's digital and energy infrastructure. Spain presents a unique opportunity for large corporations to swiftly expand their digital presence close to established data center markets, and importantly, in a highly sustainable manner."

The Algete Data Hub will feature a state-of-the-art hyperscale data center, named AVAIO Digital Scorpio, designed to accommodate both cloud computing and AI applications. The center has secured 56.3 MW of clean electricity from Iberdrola, Spain's leading electricity generation and distribution company, in addition to 8 MW of initial power, with interconnection agreements already finalized. This clean energy will commence delivery starting from 2028.

This new data center will also ensure low-latency connectivity with major data center complexes in Alcobendas and Alcala, as well as integrate with Spain's extensive national fiber-optic network. This infrastructure enhancement will facilitate direct connectivity with other significant data markets across Spain, continental Europe, and international markets via multiple undersea cable landing points in Spain.

The Algete facility will be built with a commitment to environmental sustainability, incorporating advanced design features that prioritize resource efficiency. It will utilize rainwater harvesting, solar energy on the roof, and a flexible, water-efficient cooling system.

Pedro Blanco, the project manager in Spain for AVAIO Digital, remarked, "This project helps to strengthen the northern Madrid data center corridor and Algete’s emerging position as a hub in this growing field. Our smart sustainable design will repurpose an old industrial site with a focus on environmental stewardship. We are excited to reach this important milestone in our development."

The AVAIO Digital Scorpio data hub is a key component of the company's broader portfolio for large-scale projects across the United States and Western Europe, where AVAIO Digital has secured more than 2 GW of power from utilities in Northern California, Virginia, Arkansas, and Mississippi. With nearly 450 MW set to be developed by 2027, the company's focus on downstream energy production, alongside sustainable practices and innovative design, positions it as a leader in the next generation of data center infrastructure.
