New Initiative to Support STEM Students
In a significant collaboration, Ford Philanthropy, Uber, and the Rocket Community Fund have joined forces with the Last Mile Education Fund to launch the Transportation Access Fund, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at supporting financially vulnerable STEM students. Spanning a period of three years and targeting a fundraising goal of $12 million, the Transportation Access Fund aims to fundamentally transform the way students access opportunities vital for their academic and professional success.
Addressing Key Barriers to Graduation
A pressing concern for many students today is the lack of reliable transportation, which has been identified as a major barrier to educational persistence. Research indicates that 35% of students affiliated with the Last Mile Education Fund face transportation challenges that impede their ability to complete their degrees. With transportation issues ranging from sudden vehicle breakdowns to inadequate public transit options, many students find their educational journeys at risk. The new fund will provide timely and flexible support to cover these gaps, ensuring that students can maintain their pathway to graduation.
Ruthe Farmer, the Founder and CEO of Last Mile Education Fund, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating,
"More often than not, the obstacle preventing a student from achieving their degree isn't a lack of academic preparedness but rather logistical hurdles. Transportation is essential infrastructure for nurturing talent. By implementing the Transportation Access Fund, we can help ensure getting to class won't hinder a student's journey towards a successful career."
Supporting the Workforce of Tomorrow
Ford Philanthropy is stepping in as a founding partner to strengthen workforce opportunities for students nationwide. Joe Provenzano, the Director of Mobility at Ford Philanthropy, remarked, "Transportation access is pivotal to creating opportunities. For students, simply reaching their classes, internships, or job interviews can often be the barrier that separates them from the futures they've worked diligently to achieve. By collaborating with the Last Mile Education Fund, we're leveraging Ford's expertise in mobility to help students cross that crucial finish line."
Uber and the Rocket Community Fund are also actively contributing to the initiative. Joshua Cooper, the Head of Culture at Uber, shared his insights,
"Transportation transcends merely moving between locations; it embodies accessing opportunities. We're excited to be part of a movement that ensures students can reach classrooms, internships, and jobs crucial to their future development."
Marvin Logan from Rocket Community Fund added, "Being at the center of America's mobility landscape, Detroit understands the vital role transportation access plays in shaping opportunities. Our partnership with Last Mile exemplifies our commitment to breaking down barriers for students."
Real-Life Impact
The Transportation Access Fund is designed to deliver swift assistance through Last Mile's specialized application model. A prime example is Diana Balderas-Pedraza, who, thanks to essential car repairs facilitated by the Fund, successfully transitioned from student to a Software Engineer at Northrop Grumman Corporation. Diana expressed her gratitude, stating, *"The Last Mile Fund not only supported me financially but also ensured I had dependable transportation to attend college and pursue academic opportunities. With reliable transportation, I overcame significant barriers and gained confidence in my future pursuits."
