Dr. Jamal Eltaeb Receives the 2025 Aurora Prize

The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative proudly announced Dr. Jamal Eltaeb as the recipient of the prestigious 2025 Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity during a ceremony held on November 6 at Ellis Island in New York. This award, valued at an impressive one million dollars, celebrates individuals who risk their lives to save others, and this year highlights Dr. Eltaeb's unwavering courage and dedication amid the conflict in Sudan.

Dr. Eltaeb has played a pivotal role in maintaining the operations of Al Nao Hospital in Omdurman—a rare beacon of hope in a region severely affected by civil war and systemic healthcare collapse. His work has enabled the hospital to continue serving a community in dire need, exemplifying true leadership and resilience under perilous conditions.

"Growing up, I witnessed how fragile life can be and how crucial one’s care and knowledge can make a difference. I aimed to be a doctor to serve people in their most vulnerable moments," Dr. Eltaeb stated, reflecting on his motivations as a humanitarian. He emphasized the importance of the Aurora Prize, which encourages doctors, teachers, and ordinary individuals around the globe to persist in their efforts, reminding them that even small acts of kindness can bring about significant change and offer hope.

Noubar Afeyan, co-founder and chairman of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, praised Dr. Eltaeb, stating, "At a time when indifference is rampant, Dr. Eltaeb stands as a testament that humanity is not lost. His story inspires a renewal of the humanitarian spirit."

The Aurora Prize has been awarded on the tenth anniversary of the initiative, which seeks to spotlight grassroots humanitarians. Out of over 800 nominations, Dr. Eltaeb was recognised for not only his medical expertise but for embodying the principles of humanitarian aid during unimaginable adversity. The funds from the award will enable him to expand his efforts and support local leaders and organizations working to assist vulnerable communities.

Chairman of the selection committee, Lord Ara Darzi, noted, "Faced with unimaginable hazards and deprivation, Dr. Eltaeb represents what true humanitarian leadership looks like. Aurora is proud to support his mission and shed light on the resilience of those enduring conflict."

Since the conflict’s escalation in April 2023, Dr. Eltaeb has bravely confronted challenges such as bombardments, infrastructure collapse, and critical shortages in medical supplies. His steadfast leadership has transformed Al Nao Hospital into a lifeline, demonstrating commitment to saving lives even in harrowing situations.

Chelsea Clinton, a member of the selection committee, remarked, "Dr. Eltaeb exemplifies the principle of refusing indifference. His commitment to humanity extends beyond saving lives, reflecting the dignity and attentiveness required to uphold community spirit during one of Sudan’s most devastating conflicts."

In addition to Dr. Eltaeb's recognition, the event acknowledged other outstanding humanitarians, including Sally Becker, Dr. Zouhair Lahna, and Dr. Jill Seaman, as well as notable philanthropists like Henrietta H. Fore and Graça Machel, who embody the initiative's core values of gratitude in action.

As the Aurora Prize celebrates a decade of impact, the aim remains to amplify the voices of those on the frontlines of humanitarian crises. Founded to honor the survivors of the Armenian Genocide, the initiative supports and catalyzes humanitarian work globally. It inspires people worldwide to act with courage and kindness, reinforcing the belief that there is a humanitarian in every person.
