Stena RoRo Welcomes 13th E-Flexer Vessel, the Capu Rossu, in Sustainability Drive
Stena RoRo Welcomes the Capu Rossu
In a significant advancement for sustainable maritime transport, Stena RoRo has celebrated the arrival of the Capu Rossu, the 13th vessel from its E-Flexer series. This latest addition was delivered from the China Merchants Industry shipyard located in Weihai, China, and is poised to enhance ferry services between Marseille and Corsica starting this mid-June.
The E-Flexer series stands out due to its larger size compared to traditional RoPax ferries and its adaptable design, aimed at meeting operator needs with flexibility. Each vessel in this series is customized to align perfectly with the operational and technical requirements of ferry companies.
Innovative Design and Sustainability Features
A key feature of the Capu Rossu, along with its sister vessels, is the highly optimized hull design, which contributes to improved fuel efficiency. The ship is equipped with multifuel engines, aligning with Stena RoRo's commitment to eco-friendly practices. In addition, the vessel has received a Battery Power Class notation, showcasing its innovative power solution designed to minimize environmental impact.
Per Westling, CEO of Stena RoRo, noted, “Today’s advancements in hull design and propulsion optimization, combined with battery power systems that we are implementing on our ships, reinforce the importance of ordering new vessels as a principal strategy for reducing CO2 emissions in the ferry industry.” This dedication to lower emissions is a step towards sustainable operation in maritime transportation.
A Collaborative Journey with China Merchants
The collaboration with China Merchants Industry (CMI) has been fruitful since 2016, resulting in a total of 19 ordered ships, including 15 E-Flexers. This partnership has ensured timely deliveries and high-quality craftsmanship tailored to specific ferry needs.
“The synergy between CMI Weihai shipyard and Stena RoRo has been vital in delivering custom ships, not only to our core operator, Stena Line, but also to other external ferry companies, upholding the highest standards,” commented Westling.
Key Specifications of Capu Rossu
The Capu Rossu spans 203 meters in length, 27.8 meters in width, and has a draught of 6.5 meters. The vessel boasts a capacity for 1,000 passengers alongside 2,500 lane meters of freight, reflecting its robust design tailored for passenger and cargo transportation.
Stena RoRo’s dedication to innovation in ferry design is further underscored by its history since 1977 in pioneering new RoRo cargo and passenger concepts. The company not only creates custom-built vessels but also maintains a fleet of standardized designs for various operators across the globe.
A highlight in recent years for Stena RoRo includes the design and completion of the world’s largest civilian hospital vessel, the Global Mercy, operated by Mercy Ships, showcasing their expansive capabilities beyond traditional ferry services.
As Stena RoRo continues to define the future of sea transport, the arrival of the Capu Rossu symbolizes a commitment to sustainability and innovation, shaping a greener maritime future.
