New LexisNexis Data Reveals Inequities in Mental Health Provider Availability Across U.S. Regions

New LexisNexis Data on Mental Health Providers Availability

In a recent publication, LexisNexis® Risk Solutions presented new insights revealing significant regional disparities in the availability of mental health providers across the United States. This report draws from the LexisNexis® Provider Data MasterFile™ and U.S. Census data, shedding light on current trends in mental health provider density.

Key Findings on Mental Health Provider Distribution

Between January 2020 and January 2024, the total number of mental health professionals across the country saw an increase of 11.4%. More specifically, Montana exhibited a remarkable rise of 209.6% in its mental health provider count, a result of recent laws aiming to reform the state's mental health care system. Conversely, nine states reported a decrease in the number of providers, with the most significant declines occurring in:
  • - Nevada: -45.2%
  • - Louisiana: -21.7%
  • - Vermont: -18.6%
  • - Oklahoma: -7.9%
  • - Hawaii: -5.9%

Such fluctuations in provider availability underscore the urgent need for updated and accessible data to ensure communities can effectively offer mental health services.

Patient-to-Provider Ratios: A Cause for Concern

The disparities in the number of mental health providers are not solely concerning in terms of quantity; they also impact the patient-to-provider ratios significantly. Understanding these ratios is crucial, especially in the face of growing demand for mental health services. The data lays bare the states that have seen the largest deterioration and improvement in these ratios over the same period:
  • - Montana: Improved by +65.6%
  • - Nevada: Declined by -96.2%

Adam Mariano, the president and general manager of healthcare at LexisNexis Risk Solutions, indicates that while there is a greater demand for mental health services, the unevenness in provider availability leaves many communities vulnerable. "States with strong mental health policies have achieved better provider ratios, which can alleviate clinician burnout while enhancing access to care for patients," he noted.

Frequent Changes and Their Impact on Provider Data

The analysis further revealed that from January 1 to March 31, 2025, approximately 24% of providers holding prescribing privileges experienced variations in at least one element of their licensing or contact information. Such changes pose challenges regarding the consistency of care, as outdated or inaccurate provider data can lead to delays in treatment and reduced efficiencies in the healthcare system.

Mariano emphasized the importance of maintaining current provider data, particularly in underserved areas, saying, "When provider information is inconsistent, it hinders patients who are already navigating the difficult journey of finding appropriate care."
