Beko's Ambitious Climate Commitments
Beko, a global leader in home appliances, is taking a significant step toward sustainability by securing validation from the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its climate goals. With a clear commitment to addressing climate change, Beko aims to achieve significant greenhouse gas emission reductions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with the crucial 1.5°C target established under the Paris Agreement.
In a bold declaration, Beko has laid out specific targets for greenhouse gas emissions reductions, primarily focusing on Scope 1, 2, and especially Scope 3 emissions, which represent a staggering 99% of the company’s total emissions. The SBTi's validation of their targets underscores the company's proactive stance in the fight against climate change in the consumer goods sector, particularly in home appliances.
Hakan Bulgurlu, the CEO of Beko, emphasized the responsibility of the entire industry to take part in these global efforts, stating, "Every sector must contribute to reducing emissions to ensure a sustainable future for our planet. We are proud to have received the SBTi validation after 15 years of integrating emission reduction goals into our business model."
Beko's short-term goals are impressive, targeting an absolute reduction of 42% in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by the year 2030, compared to 2022 levels. Additionally, the company aims for the same 42% reduction in Scope 3 emissions, which are primarily associated with the usage of sold products. In the long term, Beko plans to slash these emissions by 90% from both Scope 1 and 2 and Scope 3 by 2050.
The drive for sustainability is woven into the very fabric of Beko's operations. The company has been investing in innovative practices across manufacturing processes, product development, packaging, material sourcing, and end-of-life product management. Such efforts are essential for creating energy-efficient products that contribute to Beko's vision of a sustainable future.
Beko’s commitment to sustainability is reflected not only in its manufacturing processes but also in its product offerings. The company is focusing on creating smart, resource-efficient appliances that help consumers minimize their carbon footprint. Acknowledging that 82% of Scope 3 emissions are linked to product usage, Beko is committed to producing energy-efficient appliances that aid in reducing overall emissions.
Looking ahead, Bulgurlu remarked, "Achieving carbon neutrality cannot be done in isolation. It is vital that our industry collaborates closely with governments, public organizations, scientists, and all stakeholders across the value chain. Such cooperation is indispensable for turning our ambitious yet crucial goals into reality."
This commitment was motivated by the urgency of tackling climate change, with Beko’s actions contributing to the broader effort to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. SBTi's role since its inception in 2015 has been to provide companies with a framework for setting green targets that align with scientific evidence.
By achieving SBTi validation, Beko demonstrates its leadership in the appliance sector concerning environmental responsibility and sustainability. They are not only ensuring compliance with global climate commitments but are also paving the way for innovation and improvements in the entire industry.
Beko operates in 58 countries with 46 manufacturing plants across 14 nations, employing 55,000 workers worldwide. With plans to enhance its sustainability and green technology initiatives, the company aspires to transform the home appliance industry, proving that economic progress and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
