On August 6-8, 2025, the Okayama University swim team made a mark at the 72nd National Public University Swimming Championships held at Inoue Toubu Sports Park Kuroshio Arena in Kochi Prefecture. The team’s standout athletes included Taichi Murakami, a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Education, who secured second place finishes in both the 100m and 50m freestyle events. Another notable performance came from Yana Chihara, a second-year student in the same faculty, who earned third place in the 200m backstroke and second place in the 100m backstroke event, gracing the podium with confidence.
In addition to individual accomplishments, the male relay team, consisting of fourth-year students Yuto Takeuchi and Haruki Yanagi, second-year student Yuuji Kasatani, and Taichi Murakami, also made waves by achieving third place in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. The championships saw a total of 98 universities and 967 athletes competing, with a strong show of talent from Okayama University students, many of whom claimed prestigious placements in various events.
Reflecting on the competition, third-year engineering student Ryogo Hieda expressed the team’s determination: “Our goal was to perform well at this event; we trained for a whole year as a cohesive team. While the results were not entirely what we had hoped for, the experience will serve as invaluable motivation for next year’s challenges.” As the team looks forward to the upcoming Japan Student Championships starting September 4 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, they are eager to build on their experiences and continue to push toward excellence.
The achievements of the Okayama University swim team at the National Championships not only highlight their competitive spirit but also underscore the university's commitment to fostering a strong athletic program while nurturing individual talents.
