Davenport Aviation Achieves Landmark with Virtus System Testing
Davenport Aviation has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of the "First Shot" tests for its Virtus system. Conducted in West Texas last month, these tests confirm that the Virtus system is ready for use on the AS350/H125 helicopter platforms.
The successful launch of several missiles during the test campaign has validated the structural integrity, system integration, and operational viability of the Virtus system when mounted on the AS350/H125 aircraft. This accomplishment allows Davenport Aviation to demonstrate a fully functional, mission-ready armed configuration that meets the demands of modern military operations and safety missions.
Rob McMillin, Vice President of Air Vehicles and Aviation Systems at Davenport Aviation, expressed satisfaction over reaching this critical milestone. He stated, “The completion of our First Shot test campaign confirms the readiness of the Virtus engineering project and proves that the H125 helicopter can operate safely and efficiently in an armed configuration.”
What is the Virtus System?
Virtus is the first modular weapon system specifically designed for the AS350/H125 helicopter family, enabling operators to swiftly change the configuration of an aircraft to suit various mission profiles. The installation and removal of the system can be achieved in less than an hour, ensuring seamless transitions from one role to another.
Designed for multi-role adaptability, the Virtus system supports variable armament configurations, ranging from container-mounted rapid-fire mini-guns and unguided rockets to precision-guided munitions and aerial launch capabilities. Additionally, the system incorporates electro-optical and infrared sensors, machine gun door options, hoists, searchlights, cargo capabilities, ballistic protection, and emergency floats, providing essential support for armed reconnaissance, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), special operations, search and rescue, firefighting, humanitarian efforts, and medical evacuation missions.
Chris Arnold, Director of Government Sales at Davenport Aviation, highlighted the significance of the successful First Shot tests, saying, “The success of these tests validates our vision of creating a true multi-role aircraft that offers operators flexibility without the high costs and complexities of traditional attack platforms. The Virtus system equips global operators to meet the growing demands of missions with a single cost-effective helicopter.”
Davenport Aviation acknowledges the invaluable collaboration with partners such as XP Services, Moog Inc., and Ember Solutions in achieving this milestone.
Built on the proven AS350/H125 platform, the Virtus system allows operators to upgrade their existing fleets while simultaneously reducing acquisition, training, and lifecycle costs. For further details, you can visit
