Takasimaya Launches Upcycling Project, Transforming Cosmetcs into Eco-Friendly Products

Takasimaya's Innovative Upcycling Initiative



Takasimaya, the renowned Japanese department store, has launched an impressive new initiative under their Depart de Loop project aimed at promoting a sustainable circular economy. Starting on October 1, 2023, this innovative project is focused on upcycling used cosmetics, transforming them into functional and stylish paper items, and even hair combs. The goal is to redefine waste as valuable resources while also inspiring customers to engage in eco-conscious practices.

The Concept Behind Depart de Loop



Depart de Loop signifies the store’s dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The program commenced in February 2023 and aims to collect and recycle cosmetics that would otherwise end up discarded. By the end of August 2025, they project to have recycled approximately 1,483 kg of material, which is a substantial amount considering that the 2022 and 2023 figures stand at 266 kg and 154 kg, respectively.

In an effort to expand the recycling and upcycling of cosmetics, Takasimaya is introducing new initiatives as part of this project. Instead of treating used makeup products as waste, they are being recognized as valuable materials ready for creative reimagining. Earlier this year, these products were repurposed into crayons and candles, but the latest innovation now includes turning make-up remnants into colored paper goods.

New Upcycled Paper Items



Starting from October 1, 2023, customers can experience the latest upcycled products at Takasimaya locations. The paper items include shopping bags and message cards that are creatively dyed using leftover materials from eye shadows and blushes. The colors are made by extracting powder residue from products that are no longer usable, which is then blended with recycled paper materials. The vibrant pinks, sparkling glitter, and unique textures promise to captivate every customer. This exclusive paper range will be distributed at select Takasimaya stores, with a promotional offer to the first 15,000 customers who make a purchase of 3,000 yen or more.

Moreover, Takasimaya plans to produce business cards for their employees, using the newly created upcycle paper with an aim to spread awareness of their sustainability efforts within the business realm.

Upcycled Combs and Circular Plastics



Another exciting facet of this initiative is the introduction of upcycled hair combs. Developed in collaboration with Parallel Plastics and John Masters Organics, these combs feature a stunning marbled effect achieved by mixing the collected cosmetic containers—both cleaned and processed—into the plastic material. The combs not only serve an aesthetic purpose but are practical for everyday use as well.

The upcycled combs will be available at ten selected Takasimaya stores and also through the Takasimaya cosmetics online shop, TBEAUT. This sustainable beauty tool represents a new chapter in the upcycle journey of plastic, reducing the impact on the environment and reflecting the brand's commitment to social responsibility.
